I am looking at a mini starter to replace the old starter, so far I can't see a downside and will make for extra room for headers.  Is there a downside or something I need to watch out for

only issue i had with the mini's(got one on the 78 and 76 vette) is that on the 76 it had to be shimmed for the flex plate... sometimes it still has a little issue when turning over. Somehow thinking that maybe the flexplate is slightly warped?... not sure, it doesn't happen enough for me to get overly concerned.... the 78 has a flywheel and never had an issue...and both cars have headers and the mini starter is much much easier to get on/off... without having to drop a header to remove a stock type starter....and takes the heat much better.....

Other than losing originality, there are no downsides. Back in the day a significant percentage of starters needed to be shimmed, so not a big deal. Modern starters typically offer higher torque for high compression engine or hot starts.

To be honest, i haven't a clue what brand they are.... i bought them at a local speed shop that is now out of business(nearly 8 years now).  Best i recall they were built by another shop near Huntsville,Al..... never had a problem with them....  I'm sure most any mini from a reputable shop will perform sufficiently ....

Check out Jegs and Summit. Many name brands and prices.

I am currently looking for a mini high torque starter on the usual websites mentioned in the posts and others.
The only one that Summit and I could find that fits the 81 is Summit's part #CSI-100SBP@$249+ My engine has a staggered bolt up, manual trans with 153 tooth flywheel.
The CSR part #100SBP starter will work with either 153 or 168 tooth flywheel/flexplate.

Don't forget to wrap the starter with a heat shield of some sort, headers are tough on starters.
