Finally had the time to remove the engine today. I dread the thought of trying to get the new one back in! A few things I would like to get your thoughts on, first - the trans hangs so low with the engine out. How have you supported it as to not break anything. I have a jack under it right now but I cant push the car out of the garage to wash the engine compartment down this way. This leads me to maybe remove it and have it rebuilt, but I guess the next question is does the crossmember unbolt and drop down? If so I think its time to do a rebuild since it looks as though thats all thats holding it in right now. do I go with a small converter  or stay stock? Small cam, headers, intake, slight head work and bored .030. I think the gearing is a 307? and I dont want to burn or overheat a trans with to high a stall speed converter. I do plan on changing gearing at some point but may be a year or so down the road. Next when you have detailed your engine compartment, did anyone paint the firewall because it looks to be fiberglass. I have the POR15 engine detailing paint so I planned on painting the metal stuff but what about the fiberglass? Have to do a slight firewall repair as the top bell housing bolt on the drivers side wouldnt come out with going against the firewall and making a small hole! Then I need to remove the radiator and shroud. It is hitting the upper control arm pivots but with my great luck the bushings are torn so when I remove them maybe the shroud will come out easier! well for now thats where I am at. I will post pics once I get more time, but I will have to figure out how to do that. I am sure i will have more questions as I go along. All I orginally wanted was to clean up the engine and compartment, but I seem to have caught the bug to do more and now the car is forcing me to do even more! Does it ever end? My wife would kill me if she knew the expense of this " what I told her was a small inexpensive project" ! isnt it fun to own a corvette!
Thanks guys for your thoughts,
Rodney

You can put some long bolts through the bell housing bolt holes and set them on a 2x4 or other support going from one frame rail to the other.

As far as rebuilding the trans, a rebuild is inexpensive insurance to me if its the original and has high mileage. I would keep the stock converter unless you plan any radical engine mods.

If you car has an automatic transmission, then your cross member is bolted in. I used Krylon high temperature paint (spray can) in my engine bay. I'm sure it's not NCRS correct, but it looks good. The radiator support helps support the nose of the car. I had mine out for months and the front end sagged and it took a few beers and swear words to get it back in - just something to keep in mind.Confused
