Hi all.

A while ago I made some modifications on my '81 to disable and eliminate the computer command syste.  This included a new Edelbrock intake and carb., Hooker headers, and an MSD high spark ignition system. The shop that did the work for me re-used my Moroso Blu Max wires and routed them under and between the headers.  It wasn't long before one of the wire jackets melted from the heat of the headers and arced, causing that cylinder to misfire.  So now I want to install a completely new set of wires and am leaning toward the MSD wires from Summit Racing.  Here's where I could use some advice...

I think I would be better off running the wires up along the valve covers rather than trying to run them under the headers. The wires sets from Summit Racing are all cut to the length to run them underneath.  My questions:
  1. Which cables do you think I should use (should I cut custom lengths?), and
  2. Which wire looms do you thing would look best?
Thanks,
Jim

Jim -- I went with red Taylor wires, routed them above the headers and used red, plastic looms connected to the valve cover bolts.  Looks great and works fine.  I also added the protective booties on the plug end under the headers.  No issues.

BTW, very sweet looking machine (at least from the rear)!  Any more pictures of your ride?

Hi Mike.  Thanks! I don't suppose you have any pictures? Also, I'm not sure how to post pictures of my car here, but in the mean time I have a bunch of them on my flickr site that you can see: http://www.flickr.com/photos/a_roadbiker/sets/72157623243521141/

Thanks for the recommendation and the compliment.

Jim, I would run on top along valve covers and I like the look of the new solid billet wire holders. For sure do a custom cut, it's not hard to make the ends up at all.

I've used Taylor wires for years. Summit and Jegs both sell custom sets at decent prices. I ran my wires along the sides of the valve covers and then dropped down between the big spaces between the header tubes.

Make sure you use some di-electric grease (just a lil dab inside each one) on the boots before sliding them on over the plugs...Wink

Okay.  I used pre-cut MSD 8.5mm wires that I bought from Summitt Racing. They fit perfectly over the headers. I used the dielectric grease, but it didn't feel like the hoods snapped onto the spark plugs. In fact, they kept popping off. I pushed them on as hard as I could, and the car is running fins, so I assume that they're on properly. My only concern is that the no. 2 wire (front-most on pass side) comes in very close prosimity to the header.

I have not found looms that I like yet, but am considering the R&M specialties vertical mounts that will run the wire along-side the valve covers.

What are you guys (or gals) using? Do you have any pictures?

Thanks again,
Jim
