am installing Vortec Heads and 214/224 cam and need to replace the intake.

What do you think the differance is between the Edelbrock intakes:

Performer, simple, less $$ and will fit under the hood.
Air Gap, looks good and needs drop air cleaner fit under hood.

I think I would clarify with someone this intake will work with a drop air cleaner. I thought I read somewhere that it would not. Summit spells it out that it will not fit a corvette. I would think if it were something as simple as the air cleaner they would say that. Afterall that is just another sale for them...

Make CHEVROLET
Engine Type V8
Engine Size 5.7L/350
Liter 5.7
CID 350
Beginning Year 1967
Ending Year 1986
Engine Family Chevy small block Gen I
Carburetor Mounting 4-barrel square bore
Cylinder Head Style (application)Stock configuration
Application Notes Accepts all 1976 and later alternator and air conditioning brackets. Will not clear stock Corvette hood.

Chevrolet makes some real nice aluminium intakes that match those heads and are priced reasonable as another option.....

I have an air gap manifold (not edelbrock) and there is no way I could clear a 79 L-82 stock hood even after removing the carb spacer and using the drop base air cleaner. I'm going for an aftermarket hood while running an air gap intake, it just makes life a lot easier. If you want I can take some pics and measurements of mine with a level straight edge running across the hood so you can see how it sits.
I was getting schooled last week from a pretty salty mechanic who explained the difference in plenum height and rpm power making, that was something I never knew about before and it has definately changed the way I look at intake setups now.

I had a Performer RPM on my 79 with the stock inyake and it cleared by about 1/2". According to Edelbrock, the Air Gap is the same height as the RPM. Technically, should clear....Geek

My question is, do you think there is a performace advantage to the air gap intake over the starndard low rise performer type intakes.

The way it was explained to me was if you want to make more torque/HP at higher RPM's then you want a taller plenum. More torque/HP at lower rpm's then a shorter plenum is better.  You do get additional cooling with the air gap but I'm not sure how much that affects the overall performance when putt'n around town. I'm sure someone smarter than me can explain it better, or correct me if I'm wrongConfused.
For me I figured it would be better for my engine to get a higher clearance hood rahter then try and mess around cramming everthing under a stock hood praying it would fit and then smothering my air flow. I'm also going to tap my carb spacer to run my headlight vac off of and run my brakes off the intake. I may even get a vaccum can to run on the brakes as well depending how my cam does.
There are some posts on here on how to measure the intake height and how much room you got using modeling clay they were really helpfull for me.  Thumbs%20Up
