I've started changing my plugs in my 71 454 Vette. Boy, my Chevelle with extra long headers was easier than this! had a brand new set of Accels stored away so I might as well use them.
So far I have the first 3 driver's side plugs done- except the very rear one by firewall. On the passenger side, I got only one in, though the back one I'm sure will come out.
I've used a combination of tools along with a plug socket. A 3/4 box end over the plug socket and a swivel head, short/small racket. I had to quit for the night, too hard.
My AC bracket covers the front two passenger plugs. I snapped one off, but I'm having a helluva time trying to get under and around and be able to use a small socket. any tips or tricks?
Man, my brother's Olds 455 w/ headers was even easier than this?
On the bright side, the previous plugs are clean-burning and were platniums. actually one or two weren't- obviously too hard to mess with.
But the electrodes or where the plug wires attach too are pretty much hammered.
Also-I'm thinking about buying new plug wires, they're pretty brittle and old from all the engine heat. That got me thinking- do those metal wrap wires help with the heat?
Otherwise, I'm thinking about a set of Pertronix stock 7mm lookers. Anything bigger than 7mm and i don't think the wire holders will allow them to "sit" in those small areas.
Any help or suggestions would be great!
