ok so while driving from Twin Falls to Phoenix (800 miles) my check engine light came on a few times.
I pulled over and pulled the codes- computer reads code 12 and 13, i know code 12 is just the diagnostic code and means that the computer is registering that it is in diagnostic mode- or something like that.
in my chiltons Code 13 refers to the o2 sensor.
The sensor will trip the check engine light only at specific speeds- with the cruise control on and above 72 mph. if the cruise is set below 72 the o2 sensor does not trip the check engine light and the car runs smoothly with no issues-
when the check engine light came on I slowed down to pull over and the check engine light shuts off at 35 mph and stays off. unless i set the cruise above 72.

the book also referred to the throttle position sensor- I will check the volts to see if it has moved and isnt set to the correct voltage. if it is i am planning on replacing the o2 sensor as well as checking the wires and connections.

anyone else have an o2 sensor trip the check engine light at above certain speeds and no other time?

Marcus

My '85 does that, too, and sets an 02 code, then it goes away.
On the '81, I don't have the info that specifically says what sets that code....is it running rich, lean, or is it not getting a signal at all? Don't know. I do have the Service manual at home, tho, so I can check into it later, unless someone else can first. I do know it will only set while driving at hiway speeds for at least 5 minutes...
Could be an 02 sensor that is lazy(not responding quick enough), might have some carbon build up on it, but could also be a wiring problem right at the sensor. Chances are a new sensor will correct the problem, as long as the fuel mixture while cruizing is within limits. The problems you've had with your fuel pressure situation is prolly also causing this code to set.....Ouch
