There are short sections of rubber fuel line that make the transition from the hard lines to the sending unit. On my 79 there were 3 in total. One for the supply, one for the return and one that vented to the charcoal canister.
After I unbolted the straps, we dropped it down about an inch (with 2 assistants) so I could wiggle my hand in there with a pair of cutters and nip the rubber fuel lines. I siphoned out as much gas as I could and had to deal with the last gallon or so once the tank was out of the car.
When I put it back in, I put the rubber fuel lines back on the hard lines first. With the sending unit bolted back on the tank, I slipped the rubber lines on to the sending unit with 2 helpers holding the tank in place. Then we bolted her back in with new insulation strips.
Good luck and NO SMOKING!!
