Hey I am going to drop the gas tank on my 81 and I am not sure about how to proceed? It looks like the fuel lines go in into the top of the tank. How do I get the fuel line? Can I drop the tank to get to the fuel lines. I drop the tank on my 70 and this is different. How do I drain the gas?

There are short sections of rubber fuel line that make the transition from the hard lines to the sending unit. On my 79 there were 3 in total. One for the supply, one for the return and one that vented to the charcoal canister.

After I unbolted the straps, we dropped it down about an inch (with 2 assistants)  so I could wiggle my hand in there with a pair of cutters and nip the rubber fuel lines. I siphoned out as much gas as I could and had to deal with the last gallon or so once the tank was out of the car.

When I put it back in, I put the rubber fuel lines back on the hard lines first. With the sending unit bolted back on the tank, I slipped the rubber lines on to the sending unit with 2 helpers holding the tank in place. Then we bolted her back in with new insulation strips.

Good luck and NO SMOKING!! Big smile

My 82 is a bit different as it has an in-tank fuel pump but I think you can get to the sending unit connections on your 81 the same way, it would be worth a try.  Remove the fuel filler door, 4 small screws at the hinge.  Then remove the trim ring that the hinge is mounted to, 4 small screws. The rubber apron that fits around the filler neck can now be lifted out and off of the filler neck. There is an overflow tube that attaches to the apron with just a push fit connector so watch for that. Once the rubber apron is gone you should be able to see the short rubber sections of hose that attach the hard lines to the sending unit piping.  Crossfire19822009-10-04 06:37:31
