Hello everybody, was wondering what fuel you are running? I have a 1980 been using mid grade. Should I add anything to it each fill up? The car idles fine runs great on the road but when I stop at a stop sign and go to take off it will cut out for a split second then run fine. Any idea's?

Thanks All

If it doesn't ping, you're good.  In fact, you might try a few gallons of regular.  If it doesn't ping when you get on it, You'd be fine with that too.  My '78 ran fine on regular.

The L48 350 & LG4 305 V8's were only 8.5:1 compression ratio. Even the L82 was only 9.0:1. So mid grade fuel should be fine for "pinging."

But you mentioned you have a slight hesitation when taking off from a stop light/sign. I'm assuming the carburetor is the stock Rochester Q-Jet. I would tend to say that might be a carburetor issue. Has the carb ever been rebuilt? If not, it could be the accelerator pump acting up or a simple adjustment on the air fuel mixture screws. If this is a Rochester Q-Jet 4bbl. check for slop in the primary (front) throttle shaft. They are notorious for wore throttle shaft bores. Grab ahold of it and see if it has any movement front to rear or up & down. If it does, then you have a vacuum leak there. That can be fixed with a throttle shaft bushing kit.

+1 on both of the above comments. Mid grade is fine, but the hesitation on take-off is likely a carb issue. Thumbs Up

I have the stock 1981 350/190 hp.  I burn regular non leaded gas.  And yes, you do have a carb issue.  It will clear up with a overhaul!!!  Mine did!!

Holley carbs can be finicky to set up. I for one am not a big fan of Holley's for the street. I've had a few Holley carbs throughout the years. They worked great for on the track, but were to temperamental for my likings on the street.

What model/cfm Holley are you running?

What do you think of Quick Fuel carbs?  Seems like they took a Holley and applied today's technology to it.

Gary, I can't speak from experience with Quick Fuel carbs. Never dealt with one.

During one of our Annual Gatherings in Bowling Green we were given a tour of Holley, I wasn't impressed with the equipment for manufacturing at the time. They had just acquired a state of the art CNC machine for manufacturing. Prior to that some of the equipment looked like Army surplus. I'm sure companies like Quick Fuel take more time and care to work out design flaws and such therefore producing a quality carb.
The only luck I had with carbs were the much hated and maligned Rochester Q-jet. Those I know for fact when properly setup they offer both good street-ability and performance.

Don't get me wrong, I don't hate Holley, but from past experience with them, I spent too much time under the hood tweaking every darn adjustment possible to get it to run consistent.
