I had my '79 out yesterday and noticed the odor of gas fumes.
It seemed like the odor increased as I drove the car harder, like when the secondaries kicked in. I got on it a few times and definitely noticed an increase of the gas fumes odor.
No obvious leaks or puddles under the car after I parked it. Any ideas?

P.S.   It has the Q-Jet which was rebuilt a few years ago and the gas tank is pretty close to full.

After it is driven hard and you smell gas how well does it start up ? Also is the vent line hooked up to the canister in the front driver side fender ? Did you lose the gas cap ?

No starting or re-starting issues after the fumes get going. It runs just as good as ever.

The gas cap is on good and tight.

I'll have to look and see about the vent line. I'll let you know.

Thanks.

How about on the intake manifold? Any staining there?
Check the rubber lines from the carb to the vapor canister on the driver side lower fender. Also check the hoses on the tank, both side. A leak there may not show on the floor, as the fuel might evaporate before dripping to the ground.

I think I got it fixed.

The large nut that holds the fuel line to the carb. was loose. I tightened it down and it seems good. I think it went loose on me once before but I did'nt recall.

Thanks for the suggestions on the vapor lines to the cannister in the fender. Gives me another place to look should the fumes return.
