I'm new to the C3 Registry.  Main reason I joined.  Does anyone know what might be causing my problem.

Good morning!  Gas smell complaints seem to be pretty common.  Needs to be chased down.  I had similar problem on our '78.  After getting alot of suggestions,  I looked at the fuel lines.  Can't specifically tell you which item fixed it, but collectively they worked. 

I agree with Turbo, probably old rubber hoses. I replaced all of mine a while back. I keep mine in my garage at home and it is sealed very tight and have no oder at all. I tend to use Doc Rebuild for hose stuff because they have real good quality and accurit kits. a little high on price sometimes but worth it in my opinion.

Yup..you have a deteriorated hose, the vapor separator, or a leak around the fuel filler neck gasket.
There are several hoses going into/out of the fuel tank, and any of them can let vapors out, and not necessarily any liquid fuel.

They way I found the leak on my '74 was when it was full of fuel. I could only smell it when it was full, and turning corners. Replaced all of the rubber hoses to/from the tank, and the vapor separator. Problem solved.
It is a fairly common issue on our cars, due to the design, and the location of the tank. Check those hoses...I bet you'll find some that are cracked...

Before I had all my seals and gaskets replaced I had the same gas smell. I had the Fuel Pump Gasket replaced with all the other stuff and my gas smell went away, I thought at first it was the carb.

When I had my gas leak late last year/early this year, I thought it was the tank and found it was actually one of the vent tubes coming off the top of the gas tank, just like Joel said.  Try replacing those and see how that does for you.

I had a similar problem.  I smelled gas!!  Found out that whenever I filled my tank to the max, the smell would be there.  Overflow tube was a problem also.

yep, the fuel lines from the tank  and the vapor seperator, the seperator is a check valve that keeps gas from running to the charcoal canister while letting the vapor through,its made out of black plastic and over the years they will crack or if the check valve inside of the seperator gets stuck it will leak or let gas get into the canister, in which destroys the canister, there is also a paper filter at the bottom of the canister that also  needs to be replaced from time to time.

I found mine due to not having the metal line from the pump to the carb.  The PO had spliced in a filter and a nipple on the carb.  It was leaking down onto the intake (what a guy he was...).

You can get the correct replacement line from any of the parts houses.  Some of the houses that sponsor our site even give occasional discounts.
