The Pace Car, which hasn't been running right since I got it last summer, is dieing when you get on it. Idles find and goes slow find. Had it in a garage and the guy rebuilt the carb, checked the pump, lines, filter and stuff. Also checked out all the elect stuff. He said only thing left is drop the tank and check that sock thing. I'm going to try that myself, so just wondering how easy it is and what to look out for. Car did sit for a long time before I got it so maybe things are gummed up. He did say the carb was a mess from old bad gas. I have a scissor lift so I can get under the back end pretty easy.
thanks for any ideas.

If you are referring to the strainer (sock thing) i replaced mine without removing the tank. I removed all the fuel from the tank, I got my 13 year old son to stick his small hand into the tankLOL he reached down to the strainer removed the old one and put the new one on. If the car was in storage for a long period of time, you should remove all the old fuel.

You should be able to remove the fuel sending unit and pick-up from the top of the tank. Make sure you have good connections when you put it back together.

If you "Chromie' guys can remove the sending unit without dropping the tank, then you're very lucky. Somewhere along the line GM made the fuel door opening too small to pull the sender through on the late models Cry. Before you drop the tank, remove the rubber boot surrounding the filler hole and inspect the 2 short hoses to the right (if not already done), they are famous for sucking air if they've never been changed yet. You can tell by looking.

Have you had the advance, timing checked out? Bad gas will give you problems at all speeds, but low volume will show up on acceleration. One thing at a time, good luck with it.

The earlier cars, from '68-'75(or so) had the sending unit on the bottom of the tank. The later cars have it on the top of the tank. The '82 cars I think you can get the unit out without pulling the tank, but the other ones require tank removal...

If you have an air compressor, you can pull the fuel line off of the fuel pump, and blow back into the tank(take the gas cap off first!). If the sock is really stopped up, it will blow it off of the end of the sender. If it has some crap on it, it may blow enough of that off to see if the performance improves any. If it does, then I would pull the tank and replace the sock. If you hear a loud "pop" when blowing back thru the line, then the sock was stopped up, and blew off of the end of the sender. In that case, you would still need to remove the tank to install a new one, and prolly clean the tank while it's off.

Yep, as Joel stated above the 82 "in tank" pump and sending unit can be removed through the fill hole in the body of the car without tank removal once the filler door and ring are removed from the hole.  It takes some twisting and turning and a good sprinkling of blue language but it will come out when you get the thing turned just the right way.  The sending unit for your 78 looks very much like the one for the 82 with the exception that the 82 has the fuel pump attached. Id go ahead and order a new sending unit gasket and replace that while I was there.

Got home from work and had a little bit of energy left so I figured what the heck I'll just drop the tank. About 2 hours and I had it on the bench. Tomorrow I'll open it up and see how nasty it looks down in there. Jimmy, those short rubber lines on the top of the tank did look pretty bad, all dried out. Whats that thing to the left that the single hose goes to?
Also, I got the build sheet. Sitting right on top of the tank.Big smile

Sorry Jeff. Got hung up for a couple of days. What a refreshing change for me. On the right is the pickup and return line, can't think of anything else it might be besides a vent tube. I'll take a look tomorrow.

The tube on the left is a vent that goes into the charcoal cannister.

Finally got her all back together. Dumped a 5 gal can of gas in and fired her up. Took her for a nice ride and ran like a champ. Big smile Replaced the sock in the tank and just for kicks the 2 rubber lines at the pump, but I'm sure it was the sock all clogged up with old gas and crap. I'm glad I had the carb rebuilt anyway. The guy showed me all the gaskets and stuff and they looked pretty bad. Starts and idles a lot better than the Silver Ann so I think that one's in line for a carb rebuild also.
Just wanted to give an update on another C3 success story.  Approve
Thanks everyone for the help and suggestions.
