There are a lot of variables here...
If the exhaust is restricted, and causing the problem, then it would stay restricted...it wouldn't "fix" itself while driving.
Could be a fuel issue, such as a restricted filter, a pinched rubber line, or a clogged vent on the tank. These could "fix" themselves while driving, depending on the actual problem.
This could also be a carb issue, such as a stuck float, which can free/stick itself while driving.
Could be ignition...but you don't normally see them get better once they start messing up. If it has the HEI, it can be the coil or module, as they fail with high heat while driving, but usually won't come back to life until they cool off completely.
Did it just feel like it had no power when you gave it throttle, or was there also noises, like backfires, or pops?
