I have a 77 with a 383 stroker and headers.  I need a new exhaust system and will run true dual exhaust pipes.  I cannot decide what type of mufflers I want to buy to wrap up the project.  I have heard the standard flo-pro mufflers and also the flo-pro v force mufflers which sound pretty nice.  Some others have suggested the trusty flowmaster 40 series but they are about twice as much as the flo-pro's.  ( I  understand the flo-pro's are basically the same).  Cherry bombs and magnaflow mufflers have also been suggested.  Please, if anyone can help narrow it down for me with your insight, I would greatly appreciate it.  I am looking to spend around $50.00 per muffler.  I also want a nice deep tone with the mufflers, but nothing to loud or obnoxious!

Thanks,
Matt

I'm a fan of the Flowmaster 40 Series, I would switch to Flowmaster 40 on my 78 but I think it would be a tad too load my the Pace Car.  I had a Cat-Back system with the 40 Series on my Dakota and the sound was awsome. I had more compliments on the sound of the truck more then anything else on the truck to include the totally custom shaker hood. cilrah2008-05-20 20:48:10

Matt, I've got a 2 1/2" aluminized exhaust system with Magnaflow mufflers.  The pipe coming off the stock rams horn headers takes the stock 2" exhaust pipe to 2 1/2" and the mufflers sound great to me.  I have gotten several compliments on the sound and one guy at a cruise in last weekend asked if I had a big block in it before he saw the engine.   Not too loud, but kind of a deep sound.  Best of all, you can tell its a vette!!  Tongue

I'm planning on using the chambered exhaust with my headers. If you like the old side pipe sound this is the same but it's not in your ear like side pipes.

I had true duals installed on my L48 with no headers and they sound great.  As was stated earlier, they are a little bigger and stick down futher than the stock mufflers that came off the car.

i`m with Larry. i like the sound of the Magna flow  mufflers. Nosal1 has them on his vette and they sound nice.

i also like the sound of chambered pipes running under the car. you can get that big block sound.

i of course choose to go with side pipes as i love the menacing sound of the 383 ( which by the way  has a distinctive sound of it`s own)

I have Dyno-Max ceramic headers into Flo-Pro Performance Mufflers. Love the sound. The other day a friend said he doesn't want a ride, he just wants to sit and listen to it idle.

A lot depends on the sound you want.  There's a lot of quality muffler brands out there but they each have their own sound.

From my experience Flowmasters give a loud, raspy sound that will rattle windows in every neighborhood you drive through.  Magnaflows will give a deep rumble that sounds manly.  I prefer the Magnaflows, but that's my personal preference...both are excellent.  I have enough hearing damage from too many rock concerts and too much gunfire over the years...Flowmasters would probably finish off what hearing I have left.

I got the exhaust setup from Corvette Central (a C3VR sponsor by the way) and it was Part#323737 with a cost of $284.80 plus shipping.

I had mine installed by a local muffler shop because I didn't have a lift and didn't think I had enough room to do it.  I'm glad I did, the kit went on pretty good, except he did have to re-bend one tube slightly to get it to line up.  I like the aluminized system because it won't rust like steel.

Try this link.   By the way, the price is the same as when I bought mine 3 years ago!!

I got a decent set up from pypes, dual x pipe with the mufflers included. Had to make the down pipes but it went on fairly easy. 79rebuild2008-05-21 17:58:03

Well I am running Hooker ceramic coated headers, aluminized 2-1/2" pipes and Flowmaster 40 series mufflers. Sounds great around town but gets a little loud on the freeway. The engine is spinning 3500 rpm on the freeway so if I go to a 5 speed the noise level should be better. I do like them though for the most part. I bought 2-1/2" sweet thunder chambered mufflers but did not install them. With the vette being a little lower than stock I would have had ground clearance issues.

I believe that C3`s should be heard! I consider them Hot Rods, Particularly the way most here like to juice them up a bit.
quiet is reserved for C5/C6. Picking a sound is tough, especially when you can`t always hear what the final sound will be `till after you installed. i went through 2 sets of mufflers for my sidepipes before i settled on the ones i have. that can get expensive. try to sample if you can before you buy. good luck and enjoy the ride!

I recently had Magnaflow Performance mufflers put on my '76 L-48. The car has headers and together I feel it has a nice soft rumble. These mufflers run about $100 to $150 each installed. They sound great!Big%20smile

I think if you spend $50 per muffler, you will be replacing them in a couple of years due to rust.
If you get alum or stainless, they will last a lot longer.

Just put on a set of cherry bomb vortex mufflers, removed the cat and replaced it with a piece of 3" pipe. Sounds great.

I've been digging around the interenet and run across this URL, it's a sound clip of a 69 Corvette with Magnaflow Performance mufflers.  You can here what they sound like.  Don't know what the engine size is or if it has headers, cam, etc.  I've also seen them for cars with Flow Master mufflers.

It would be interesting if we could put video clips somewhere like this of how the forum members cars sound and what engine and mods they have.

I love hearing a Vette take off.  An older gentleman (I'm 50 to give you a reference on what I think is older) pulled up beside me at a red light yesterday and asked me if my car could fly because it sure sounded like it could.

I was sold on the Magnaflow mufflers when I put one on my '94 Chevy truck with a V6 and it sounded great, much like a V8 sound coming from a single. I traded that good 'ol truck for my Vette and I just couldn't wait to get those Magnaflow Performance Mufflers on her.Big%20smile

Well everyone, I just got my exhaust finished from the headers back.  It turned out great.  I ended up going with the Flo-Pro VForce performance mufflers.  It has a nice sound with some throat!  Just what I was looking for!
