tonight i had to pull the top off the carb again. this makes the 4th time since i owned it with less then 1000 miles since the first time this happened to me. My problem is always the same thing. The accelerator pump pulled off the shaft. I have inspected the bore for nicks or burrs and found nothing. The last two pumps are from summit and they are the edelbrock ones. I am thinking about giving up on the quadrajet and going to either a demon edelbrock. Would really like to make the stock carb work but running out of patience. Has anyone else ever ran into this problem. the numbers from the carb are 7044206, and E4 FA. Tomorrow I am going to try to see if the Chevrolet dealer has one. I doubt they stock any carb parts anymore! When I look at the pumps that i remove you can see how the rubber has swelled compared to a new one. I am told to run only Shell gas now. They dont have any ethenol? So i will try that. Need some help! Thanks.

Oh yea, I didnt say this in the original post but it always stops spraying which I need to start the car  and take off without a very bad flat spot, and hesitation. And the carb number may have a 1 in it before the 7.

Maybe , just maybe I have solved this issue! I wont know until I can drive it tomorrow. But heres what I have found out. The accelerator pumps that I have been using have all been just the shaft and a rubber pump cup. I found an old 80's quadrajet from a friend at a garage which he gladly donated to me. I removed the top from his carb and found that his pump had the cup that has the spring that goes on the shaft up inside the pump cup. His pump was also about an 1/8th inch shorter than the ones I have been using. So I took the cup off the edelbrock pump, put it on his pump with the spring inside the cup and it seems to have solved the problem. And now the spring should also help keep the cup from rolling off the shaft as the previous few have. Now as soon as I touch the throttle I have a shot of fuel coming with it!  I let it warm up and no flat spot no hesitation! Cant wait till tomorrow to try it out and see how it works once it has run for a while. I am still hoping to keep a quadrajet on it!

Hopefully you nailed it, Rod.

A while back I had trouble with the acc. pump on my Q-jet. It turned out that my non-stock air cleaner was interfering with its linkage. A genuine GM air cleaner solved the problem.

Gives us a yell tomorrow to let us know how it went.

Don't know why I haven't seen this thread sooner....
Are you saying that the acc. pumps you have been getting did NOT have a small "garter"spring around the inside of them, on the bottom side? If they did not, then that is very likely the problem, if the pump "cups" keep falling off the pump rod. I've seen quad acc pumps without the spring, but the rods are different.

Adam,
Yes the carb kits from napa had the shaft with pump cup and no spring inside the cup. The original pump I removed after the first failure after I bought the kit had no spring inside the cup and the 2 pump assemblies that I ordered from summit that are edelbrock also have no spring inside the pump. As a matter of fact they dont have a retailer to even hold the spring. Only the pump cup will fit on those rods. I was asking my dad if he had any of the old leather pumps laying around when I ran into the rods with a retainer that would hold the spring and cup. Then when I got the tomco kit it was the first one that had a cup spring with it. I am really disappointed in the NAPA quality. I drove the car today for the longest drive since i bought the car 4 yrs ago. about 110 miles but never getting more than 20 miles from home. I was on pins and needles wondering when it was going to fail me. I cant imagine telling my wife we were going to walk! lol! But I can say it performed great and I had a blast as I was traveling with the antique club from York. I did take an accelerator pump and tools along but never needed them. The car was fun to drive. Hopefully this will allow me to move on to the next project which are the 3.55 gears i bought last night then the final thing will be the tranny. Just havent decided on the 700r4 or the 2004r yet. leaning to the 200! Adam what are your suggestions? Thanks for everybodies help and thoughts on this as I think I actually had 2 different threads on this over the last 2 months.

This is not Adam giving you this advise, just so you know.Me personallly ,I would put in the 200R4. There are less changes to be made and the trans is the same size as the 350 you most likely have in there now. The 200R4 is highly under rated, If built right it can stand up to 1000 hp with no problems( I know this from my Grand National days and mine had 900 hp on the street)but it is all up to you this is just my 2 cents P.S. take the gears back and get 3:73 if your going to 4 speed auto you will be happier on the street

Bill, My vette actually has a 400 Turbo in it from the factory. I have been told so many different things about each one. I am hoping that the 2004r and the turbo are the same lengths ao I dont have to cut the drive shaft. That would save approx $100. Bow ties has quoted everything to me for approx $2400. That includes tv sytem, dipstick, lines, clutch lockup kit, crossmember which I am hoping to not need if they are the same length, and a 2200 stall converter.  And then their other stuff that is standard to get setup. I have a trans shop that is local, that races the grand nationals and he uses the 2004r and he is going mid to high 10's he tells me.

Just a quick update, been a week and all is still working great. Does anyone know where I can buy an original pump and shaft so I have a spare for the future. GM has discontinued them according to the 2 local dealers.
