Got some scarry news today.ShockedDead  Seems that my smog pump's bearing are going OUT and she's makin' this strange sound under the hood.  Sounds like a can with rocks rolling around under there!!  There's a valve thing that runs to the smog pump and I found out I need one of these hard to find things.  Then I find out the part is $1,500 at Midway Auto Parts and on Ebay they are $880!!!  WTF??!!!  Why is this part so HIGH??!!  Does anyone out there know anything about this??!!OuchShockedShockedShocked

Maybe Rich will chim in.........................

Luckily, 79's do not have a smog pump. Aren't I lucky? Sorry to hear your dilemma, Miki. Where have you been? We miss your wit! Have a good one!

Man am I bored at work to be on here at 10 am..I am actually on a computer so found this one pretty easy..yes I did make the air pump look like it is still hooked up but the pump itself is completely locked up..I haven't taken it apart yet and see if I could put new bearings in it so this is what I did..I cut the old belt off and stapled it to the air pump pulley..unless you really look and don't see a belt going to the water pump you will not notice it..I think Mike took a picture of it for the CFAC show///Iron82//..you can just remove the belt but I think it looks good with it on there plus it really does nothing to horsepower..

I would look at the salvage yards, several are the same part,  I have one off my 87 chevy pickup that has the guts out of it so it's just a fancy pully. You might look at Pace performanc they sell an airpump delete pully.  Are they doing the emission test up where you are?

The answer to WTF is "Because they can."However...  We have one off a '75.  I held it next to the one on my '69 and it sure looks the same.  I am sure the casting number is different, but it will certainly fit, and look the same.  And the good news is we get $100.00 including brackets.

I tink she needs the diverter valve, Larry, as well as the pump. I've seen those as rebuilts(the valves), but they are not really meant to be used...more for show.
Folks that took all of that "smog crap" off their cars back then are sure wishin they had kept it all, since the prices for some of that stuff is thru the roof now.

Hey Rich, didn't you have to plug up the smog stuff on the engine also?  I heard that if not, you could blow the muffler's off.  Don't know if that's true for sure, but I heard that from a guy that used to work on them in the '60's when he first started as a service mechanice for a GM dealer.  I was trying to keep this old junker original...............but if one of those valves cost THAT much, I might have to do some customizing!LOLDead  What did you do with your diverter valve?Shocked

Oh yes Joel I am sure people wish they did not take off the Em stuff..I am glad they did..makes a complete system worth that much more..ok as in diverter valve are we talking about the check valve that is in the exhaust manifold air pipe..it's where all 4 pipes come together???  You can see it by the PCV valve.. I like original stuff also and will be taking apart the pump to see what I can do with it.

The diverter valve is bolted to the rear of the smoggin pump.....
Rich, the valves you are talking about are the check valves.
Mickers, Larry has a smog PUMP that will work. Since you said your's has bad bearings, you will need to either replace it, or have it repaired.

I found a smog pump before I posted this..........still need a diverter valve.  I found this on Fleabay:

But.............this seems to be a diverter valve siliencer.  I don't think this is the part I need (it's too cheap tooLOL).  I think the one for $800 sold already.  What's this cottin' pickin' thing supposed to look like?ConfusedConfused  The part they took off is at Cedar Valley.?

Ok check on the check valve..I haven't done anything else to the car but to make sure that the check valves worked..I put the pipes on the car when I got it..they were the original ones that were taken off some time in it's history..I painted them..they still had the hoses and clamps on them.. and yes the part that you found is just a muffler type peice..not the valve itself..get the old one back dernit!!!  oh and Joel how do you these little circles and stuff on these pics???  Really neat thing..
Smog Pump Diverter Valve Silencer 66-70
That is just the "muffler" for the div. valve...not the actual valve.
Why do they say it needs the diverter valve, anyway? Is it melted? If it is, then you'll also need to replace the check valves. The check valves are basically one-way valves, that will allow the fresh air from the smog pump to go into the exhaust. If the check valves are bad/defective, they will allow exhaust gas(hot!) to flow into the smog pump/diverter valve, which will eventually damage both components. Moisture/humidity will also damage the pump eventually.
oh and Joel how do you these little circles and stuff on these pics???
Shhhhhh....Ancient Chinese secwet!! Geek

Actually, I use the "Paint" program for Windows to do the edits and stuff(like re-sizing) on the pics. I first "save" the pic to my hard-drive, and edit it from there. Won't work on a Blueberry, tho...

I gotta go to the 2011 Gathering....................I will sign up next week.  Sounds like fun.  Maybe while I'm there I can pick up some stuff for my German Putt Putt.

I gotta ask that Larry guy at Vette Specialties about a radiator support for a '69 and this other metal part under that (don't know the name of it).

Whew!  My head is spinning.  The pump we have is complete including the diverter, pulley, and brackets.

I assume you are asking about the radiator core support.  They are $239.99 new.  We might have a used one, depending on which radiator you have.  Is the thing under it the crossmember?  New ones are $150.00.  We hae a used one for $75.00.
