I'm trying to verify whether or not these metal tags were indeed present on 73 and 74 4 speed cars. The 73-74 Judging Manual states the tags should be there. However, in all my research so far I can only find tags present and listed online up to 72 GM cars. I have posed this question on the NCRS technical discussion board and have had absolutely no response as to whether or not they were present. The part numbers are the same for 72-74 Muncies. Note that there were three choices in 72 and only two choices in 73-74. Here are the tag part numbers: 72 - 6271516-M20 72 - 6271518-M21 72 - 6271517-M22 73 - 6271516-M20 73 - 6271518-M21 74 - 6271516-M20(early cars)? 74 - 6271518-M21(early cars) ? Also worth noting the part numbers were followed with two letter broadcast codes. Ex. 6271516WD - would be correct for my M-20 tranny car. I found the letters WD in the transmission call out box on my original Buildsheet manifest. I have asked a couple 73-74 owners who say the tags aren't present on their cars. I find it hard to believe that GM would stop this practice beginning with the 73's, but then again a lot of things were changed beginning with the 73. This being said, I'm hoping to get more of a response from all you original 73-74 owners who know for sure that your Muncie tranny's were never worked on and thus the tag could have been removed, lost,or misplaced. Also worth noting: During this process I found a mistake in the 73 AIM on page 294. It has the part numbers for the tranny's listed incorrectly. They have part #6271518 for the M-20 and part #6271516 for the M-21 which are reversed and not correct. The 72 AIM has them listed correctly. Would someone please check your 74 AIM to see if it is listed correct there? These original tags are very pricey and I would want to make sure they were actually present before making a purchase. Inquiring minds want to know🤓 Thank you, Jimmy

'74s would have a Borg Warner Super T-10 in them. Mine does NOT have a tag. Then again, mine also has no VIN derivative on it, either, but...my car was held "hostage" on the assembly line in '74 during a strike, so I don't know if the trans was replaced at the dealer, or it never got stamped at the factory. The assembly date is correct for the car...just no VIN stamp.

Joel, You are correct about the Borg Warners. However , I think there were a few early 74's that might have got the muncies according to what I've researched. I think I'm going to retry on the other forum again later to see what reaction I get. Thank you for responding.

Where is the tag located?  I can check mine easily as it's sitting on the garage floor.

It would be bolted to one of the lower tranny case bolts. I'll try to add a photo, Thanks for responding. This tag is for the M20, the number is 6271518 for the M21 and the broadcast letters would be different. Jim

Thanks for getting back to me. was the tranny ever worked on in the past. The reason I ask is that these tags were removed during rebuilding and not replaced, because no one really cared. Most of these I'm finding online are now being sold for big $$$ from transmission repair shops that have tons of these. There is a market now because of restoration and judging points for little original items like these. I was able to find only one NCRS Technical Discussion board archived article that mentioned this tag on a 73 Muncie??? Maybe I'm just beating a dead horse! Thanks again, appreciate your help.

Yes, I'm the original owner.

Edit: FWIW, it's a M20 wide ratio.

Embarrassed
I've saved a few of them over the years meself, not to try to sell, but just to keep in case I, or someone else needs it for a resto. Most of mine are from musclecars, like Camaros, Chevelles, etc. I think I may have actually bolted one on to my trans at one point, just so it would be visible during Judging, but normally, on the Judging field, most of the Judges are too fat, er, large to crawl under there far enough to see it anyway...LOL

btw...I did a build on a Muncie in a '59 Corvette a couple of weeks ago, and I did leave the tag on the unit when I was done. Tongue

John. Thanks, Good to hear that your getting it all back together. Good luck with everything! Joel, Thank you too for your reply I did get one for a very reasonable price. I'm going to put it on the car. If a judge has a hard time seeing the tag on the lower left side of the tranny, how in the world can he check the serial number and date code on the top of the right side??lol Jim
