I'm trying to find a picture/ dimensions of the tool that you use to stick through the two factory holes located on both sides of the 73-74 firewall. There are two plastic removeable plugs installed in the holes from the factory. (If there is such a tool!). I know that GM actually sent out a service bulletin with a photo of a tool, instructions on how to make it, and instructions on how to use it. This would be for the cars with the pop up wiper door. But I could not find this info for the 73. My research found that many guys just say to use a long screw driver. I found that near impossible to do on the 73 without the possibility of chipping or damaging the windshield. I have a few more questions concerning the plugs, and this process. Maybe you guys will be able to shed some light: 1. How many holes/plugs did the 68-72 vettes have? 2. I know of one 71 that has only one on the passenger side/ why the difference? 3. Was there a difference in the hood release cable assemblies? Most that I've looked at appear very similar. 4. Why is there only one plug on the right shown in the 73 AIM? 5. Was there ever a GM Service bulletin released specifically for the 73-82 cars with the longer hoods? Talking with the owner of the 71 he states that the right side releases both sides of the hood. However, on my 73 my left side operates both releases, but when I push on the right side it doesn't release the left. I tried this with the hood up. I haven't tried anything with the hood closed, that's why I'm looking for info on the "tool". Thanks, Tooch

Jim, I found the TSB you're referring to on CF, I'll post the images later today when I get back to my PC. It was issued in 1971 for '68 to '71 cars but I'm sure it would also hold true for '72's. Photos and illustration of tool needed definately show going through the access hole plug on the right side and pushing on the RH lock to release both. My '73 has an access hole plug on both sides and it looks like the left side would be a straight shot to the LH latch. As you mentioned this TSB was issued for cars with wiper door mechanisms. With the wiper door up, I think it would be feasible to go through either side to unlatch. The issue I see with '73+ cars is with the hood closed and latched, getting to either plug is pretty tight. It would definitely be a special bent rod to avoid mucking up the windshield and hood. Looks like an opportunity for a C3VR TSB !! I'll see if I can mock something up. With the hood open, I did try pushing my RH latch and the cable appeared to release the LH latch, not completely sure if it would work with the hood closed and latched. My vote is the left side for 73+ cars.

Hi John, How have you been? Fine I hope! You can see I'm still at it trying to get info, and asking questions. Thanks for getting back to me. No need to send me the TSB or photos of the earlier C3 tool. I already have them. Yes, I got it from Alan71 on the CF too. As a matter of fact he and I have been going back and forth recently with this topic. Interesting thing is that the 71 only has one access hole and plug on the right hand side. Nothing on the left. That's why I was hoping to hear from some earlier C3 guys on here. Also, I did find a photo of a tool on line that I believe someone on this forum designed a while back, but it was so long ago the photos are no longer on this forum, just the text! I'll send you photo of it on you personal email because posting photos on this forum is just to much of a hassle for me for some reason. It is so much easier on the CF and NCRS TDB. At least for me anyway. Regards, Jim

Incase you are feeling the need to make something....  here is a little tip on youtube to make a tool to help open the latch... I've been there too, cable broke, took an hour or so with a screwdriver but finally got it open, and kinda like the zip ties this guy used in the video, i used a metal coat hanger and made an under hood opener.... this guy's tool seems simple enough...
