Having that kind of paperwork will make the car more valuable...how much is anyone's guess. If the car is nice, it will make a larger difference than it will if the car is a fixer-upper. But either way, paperwork is important.

I can get you the dealer invoice for your 1979.  It has all the info on the dealer and costs/lists for the car.  It's better than a tank sticker and it lists every factory option.  I do have to charge because my sources charge me but with window sticker and this invoice it runs $120.

All of what the guys said, plus a couple of thoughts.

First time corvette buyer - My boss recently was given the go-ahead from his wife to get a sports car.  He came to me and I started explaining Value i.e. numbers matching, documentation etc.  After a couple of minutes, he had the dear in the headlights look and said he didn't realize it was that complicated.  I told him for a first time buyer it doesn't have to be.  Just fine a vette that grabs you and I'll be your wing man on it.  To him rebuilt engine and brakes would be a big thing, but other than that it would be just the car that speaks to him.

Another example and more to your question.  I have a '68 the first year C3 numbers matching  etc. but some documentation is lacking, even thought I've traced the ownership back to '97 and spoke to all of the previous owners.  Real nice original car so I bought it anyway and am pursuing any documentation I can find.  Mainly for the value to me.

I though it might be cool to have the C3 first year and the last year, which was '82.  I looked at a nice coupe with a original dealer's order slip, but the mileage on the title was "Exempt", so the 29,000 couldn't be verified.  Although real nice I passed.  The very next day I ran across a '82 Collector Edition.  He has the original dealer window sticker, Tank Build Sheet, owner's manual and a personalized letter from the original owner (he's the second),  California Title which lists Odometer Date of 09/09/2001 "Actual Mileage" and Odometer Reading 51,005.  The odometer 3 Mar 2014 when I looked at it read 52,345.  Given this info I pulled a CARFAX and it verified with 6 records the the car was clean in all areas and in fact has only been driven 1,290 in the last 13 yrs.

The condition is cosmeticly nice, with a few things here and there that I'll have taken care of, but for me who puts value on documentation of originality and history, this was a no brainer for me and made the sale.

Both cars were nice if there was no documentation on either, it would have come down to condition and price.  But between the two, one having documentation and one not, like someonne else said "icing on the cake" and that documentation made the sale.....buy the way the guy came down and matched the price of the coupe so I got the CE for the same price.......I'm a happy camper, because that icing will be there when I sell  it.

Long winder but I wanted to share the two perspectives.

Excellent perspective, Rick!I would have to agree. If looking at more than one to buy, both in similar condition, but one with more paperwork, I'd have to go with the documented car. No matter what year it is, papers will always help with the value.

stevep316 said: Hey guys- heres a question for you- Does having the original dealer paperwork for a numbers matching corvette increase its resell value? For example, i have a 79 that is what hagerty would call a condition 3 or 4 car that has all original stuff with a newly rebuilt original engine and brakes.

What would the difference be with or without that? Thinking of selling the car at some point.

Steve, good questions and many good perspectives.  Today I closed on my '82 Collectors Edition and the California owner sent me the original Window Sticker; Tank Sticker/Build Sheet and Owner's Manual.  When you sell and have a line telling what documentation you have with it, will get the attention and it should help you sell it.  Just having it is a conversation piece at shows.

Being a person who just bought a car with documentation, I was blown away with the condition of these two pieces of documentation and the Owners Manual when I received them today.  The owners manual doesn't even look like it was ever looked at.

Would I have paid the same for the car without the documentation? Yes, great price for story, low mileage and condition.  Am I happy to have the documentation to go with the above?  I have a giant smile and absolutely blown away, as the tank stickers sometimes take a beating and have information missing or are in pieces.

I would be cautious about claiming a dealer invoice is better than a tank sticker...perhaps early buildsheets from 1967-72 but when you get a buildsheet from 1973-82...it contains codes that when reconciling with installed parts...confirm originality and a matching numbers C3!  Below are listed three factors that differentiate a dealer invoice from a late model C3 buildsheet or what I refer to as the GMAD manifest.

  1. Mendoza's posted buildsheet of a 1982 is an excellent example, I can take that document, trace broadcast codes back to what's installed on his vehicle and learn whether what's on the car is original to that car.
  2. The dealer invoice is no more than a printed data set derived from production and sales documents. The report calls out installed buyer options and their costs.
  3. A buildsheet will call out all RPOs including merchandising RPOs that call out sub-RPOs. Again Mendoza document set illustrate the RPOs printed on the invoice versus those on the buildsheet. You'll find RPOs on the buildsheet that are not printed on the dealer invoice...the buildsheet includes all RPOs while the dealer invoice is limited to those the buyer selected as options.

I'm sure someone has posted this info before but you can get Dealer Invoices from GM Archives for 1977 and later Chevrolets at the following website.

Thats  great advice! What i like about my car is that i have the actual paperwork the previous owner had from the transaction. While the car is not the prettiest out there, it has every bit of documentation to prove its mileage and its ownership history. The previous owner was a relative and i can say first hand it has had no accidents or serious issues its whole life. its only recently had the engine rebuilt professionally, using its original block.

Does anyone have any advice how to list a vette like this? Im definitely ready to let it go to a good home.

I have every scrap of documentation that ever came with my car because I am the original owner.  I have a letter dated August 1979 from the salesman informing me that the 1980 Vettes were ready to be ordered.  (I even have his business card.)  The only 'problem' is that - other than personal satisfaction - all that documentation won't get me anything.  That's because I am giving my Vette to my oldest granddaughter when I'm gone. (And I wouldn't have it any other way. Smile)
