Hey folks,
glad i found what appears to be a very knowledgable site full of "expertsWink
i'm a firm beliver in learning from others, so i look forward to your comments /suggestions.
yes - i will purchase a factory shop manual... as soon as i find out where...

i stumbled across and purchased a 77 a month or so ago, from the original owner.
a 72 year old retired accountant. yes - *SHE* bought it new.
all her life has only driven Corvettes.
stared with a 58, then 67 (427) then the 77.
no - she didn't have the earlier ones  any longer...
She downgraded to a Honda Pilot so she can travel across the USA.

anyway - "Casper" is a 350/4spd/Ttop/ AC with147,000 or so on the odometer.
starts right up and purrs, just raring to go....

however....

on the drive home, unless i was very careful when releasing the clutch - there was a WHAM in the back-end somewhere...  probably a bad bushing or broken bolt i thought.

getting on the freeway - in 2nd - i pressed the throttle and felt the darn thing dart toward the right shoulder.
i lifted and it shot back to the left...   *WOW*   says i... well - ok - that's not really what i said...

putt-putting down the right lane, waiting for the traffic to clear - i hit the throttle again .. same behavior.... okey dokey me thinks, can't let wife drive this until it's fixed.....

i haven't  looked under there yet - kinda waiting until my son gets back from Afghanistan... he doesn't know i picked up this little project.....I don't think it'll stay in MY garage long.

so - what  the heck might be going on back there??!!!
think i made a  $3000 mistake?

any thoughts are much apprecaited.

thx in advance.. Pappy

Welcome to the site!
Well the price sounds right but looks like she needs some TLC
You have rear Diff problem or Bearing or Control arms but for sure a problem do not drive it until its figured out and for sure not on the highway or one of those rear tires may pass you.
Some one much smarter than me (so most anyoneBig smile) will chime in here soon. But please do not drive it until we have a handle on the problem for you.

You will need to get under the car to start running that to ground or at least get the front wheels of the ground and see if something is really loose in the front end.

Manuals best bet is ebay for the Shop manual.  I do not know how much good the multi-year manuals will be for your year.  They were worthless for my 82.  I have a few of them.  If a shop manual is for a just a couple of years of C3 it my so you some good.  I checked ebay and found some reasonable 78 & 76 shop manuals but no 77. I know ZIP sells 77 but they want over $100 for it.  So depending on how quickly you going to get into repairing your car that may or may not be of interest.  I like the assembly manual as it helped me find things a lot and is cheap $20 at Corvette America.  Just personal preference on the assembly manual.

May be this weekend you can put it up on jack stands and poke and pull some stuff and give someone a better idea of what the condition is.

Pappy  Got a good lead on a service manual for you.  It seems that Mid American Motorworks (a supporting Vendor so make sure to let them know you are a member of C3VR so that they stay a supporting vendor)  Has them on CD of the GM shop manuals (Part Number 648-258-77) and it is only $30.  They also have the assembly manuals (paper format) for $25.

I will try and give you a link but you may have to past it into your browser.  http://www.mamotorworks.com/corvette-4-68-8825.html

Welcome to C3VR, Pappy!Clap

You have, from your description, at least two different issues.
The "bam" when letting the clutch out sounds like the front diff mount bushing has basically gone to the rubber gods...may it rest in pieces...
The shooting off in one direction when on the accelerator, and then off to the other direction when letting off points to front trailing arm bushings...or what's left of them.

This pic link shows the diff assy and front diff mount cushion("front mount bracket"), part #6527K in the diagram. https://www.c3vr.com/member_pages/4401_4500/4427/diff1.JPG

This pic shows the front trailing arm bushings.

Check these items and see if there is anything left of them. The front diff bushing being bad will not cause a safety issue when driving, but the t-arm bushings definitely will!
If you do not see any problems with these things, then you may have something else happening...Ouch

btw...I saw the pic of the car you uploaded. I think you done good @ $3000, imho. That's a fair price, and it gives you plenty of room to make repairs, without getting in too deep. Thumbs Up

Thanks for the great welcome and good advice!

NO- she's not from Passadena...  hometown Phoenix - some open roads that she loved... Big smile

will order the manuals from Mid american and get to work. i have no intention of driving the car until it is safe enough for my wife. Smile

poking around a bit - i found some places offer a complete "re-build" kit for the rear suspension (bushings, bolts, etc) for about $300..
I suspect this would be a good thing to acquire - to begin the proces......

will try to take some photos during as the work progressess.

Anomaly - this thing has a Craig stero -- well - AM/FM and CB combination.
{no 8-track -sadly, i still have quite a collection- or cassette player..}

THANKS again!

Ahhhhhh....I remember well the days of the Craig "Powerplay" stereo! I've got an underdash PowerPlay around here somewhere...Am/FM/8 track with the locking , removable mount. If you had a Craig Powerplay in the early '70s, you wuz hot stuff!!

LOL - while i do have an  under-dash 8- track player in the garage..
i play the tapes indoors - on the house stereo.. yea -- it's that old ..
the 8-player sits on top of the dual-dubbing cassette deck which is right next tothe reel-to-reel unit...

LOL -- geez -- i gotta get a life.. Confused
