Hey, I've failed locating a free downloadable user manual for my 72. Do they exist online? Figure it would be the easy way to answer questions like: how many gallons does my tank hold? What are those weird knobby deals under the steering column for? etc etc.

Thanks,
Dave

Dave, you can purchase reprints of the Owner's Manuals from just about any of the Corvette parts vendors, including the Sponsor vendors here. Normally around $20. Thumbs Up

Tank holds approx 20 gal.
The funky knobs under the steering wheel are for the headlight door, wiper doors, and wiper over-ride.

72 OM says gas tank hold 18 gallons.

Left pull down pops the headlights up (for washing most likely)
Right pull down opens the wiper door
Round knob between them makes the wipers come out and park on the windshield (for various reasons)

Tongue
These cars are a trip! I tried to pull the knobs down last night....they are not wanting to move. Probably haven't been flipped in a long long time if ever. Any tricks to keep from breaking the old brittle plastic? I was thinking pop the hoses off and shoot some silicone spray in the valves....what do ya think?

Thanks,
Dave

The over-rides were installed because of freezing issue up north. In cold.wet weather, the vacuum system wasn't stout enough to punch thru ice, so they over-rides were designed so you could open the headlight and wiper doors, and leave them open in cold weather. The center, twist knob stops the wipers in mid-sweep, to allow for changing the wiper blades.
The push-pull knobs can get stuck. You might get lucky and be able to free them by spraying a lubricant up in them. However...the rubber seals(o-rings) in them may have dried out to where they are no good anyway, but it's definitely worth a shot. Sometime spraying them with WD40(or whatever) will get the seals softened up enough to work just fine.

I would like to jump in here.  I did the same bought myself a 1975 corvette to play with in the winter in the garage ( I have a 1992 that I drive in summer)  I am totally confused as to which manuals to purchase there are so many opinions out there the AIM manual, the service manual etc. I want one so that when I start to disassemble it has breakdowns in it for me in case I forget where something came from and the specs to go along with it (clearances allowances, torques etc.) it would be nice to have a least two guys agree on the same ones

My car came with 2 "repair" manuals.
"Chiltons General Motors Corvette 1963-1982" PN#28500 and then a more universal Chltons that covers Vetts 63-74 and Camaros and a couple other GM cars. Each is good and each shows slightly different stuff.

The most valuable manual you can have is the AIM(Assembly Instruction Manual), especially if you are doing any major dis-assembly. The AIM diagrams every single part on the car, gives part numbers, specs, and locations.
The Factory Service Manuals are just what the title suggests....manuals to guide you when servicing the vehicle. The FSM are much more model specific than the Chilton's, or any others. In most cases, the FSM will only deal with one specific year model, tho some years require the previous year's manuals to be complete(such as the '75...it requires both the '75 and '74 manuals).

Try this and see if it is what you are looking for. Looks like it is a scanned document and a little rough in places.

That's an interesting link. The first 100 pages or so is this Chevy manual: http://www.ebay.com/itm/1972-Camaro-Nova-and-Corvette-Repair-Shop-Manual-72-Chevy-Chassis-Service-/360688319000?pt=Motors_Manuals_Literature&hash=item53fab2fa18&vxp=mtr

The rest is some useful additional specs/ info.
Thanks,
Dave
