I'm looking to buy a '78 or '79 coupe. I live in central NYS, but am willing to drive up to about 250 miles since I want a 4-speed manual transmission. I've found a number of vehicles of interest in Martinsburg, PA -- Hobby Car Corvettes. Has anyone on the C3VR ever dealt with them. Can anyone vouch for their reputation and/or business practices? Thank you so much!

Hey Newbie,

I visited Hobby a few years ago when I was first beginning to look for a C3.  It was a bit of a drive and the weather was cold.  The place looks like a poor little 'dirt lot' country car dealer from the road and it's easy to miss.  They have some nice cars, inside their small showroom, and I believe they are expert in their field, but I left feeling very unsatisfied.  They didn't offer any help in how to choose a C3.  The son told me I was asking all the wrong questions, but didn't offer to help with any of the right questions.

I don't know your experience with C3's, but if you're new to this hobby, then I strongly suggest you spend a lot of time here and the "Corvette Forum" reading everything you can.  It took me about a year before I finally bought my basket case.  But, like you, I knew what model year I wanted.  Then I had to look at a few rotten wrecks before I found my new love.

Sincerely,
John

Hi Alan, Are you a member of the Mohawk Valley Corvette Club? I will most likely be joining that club, as it's the closest one to me. Thanks for the offer to help with my search. Have a pleasant evening!

Thought I recognized the cars in your profile pic. Also, the white check pattern on the driveway. I've been on the MVCC site a few times and was impressed with the number and scope of activities you do out there. Hopefully, I can make it to a meeting soon -- I see you have one on Wednesday night.

I agree with John.
I visited there about 3 months ago.
he does have all corvettes.
he also repairs and paints them on his premises in an open shop.
I looked at a few C3s and was not comfortable with any.
there are a lot of other choices.
Paul.

Thanks Paul! Based on input from a couple other posters, I will definitely concentrate my search closer to home (central NYS). Thanks again!

I do not know anything about Hobby Town Corvettes but do suggest going with know vette owners whom know what to look for....My buying experience was not good, but It ended up real good! I would yell at my kids for looking at eBay and here I bought my first vette on eBay sight unseen and trailered up from the swamps of Florida! I had been looking around but not real serious and for some dumb reason looked for corvettes under eBay and there it was, what I was looking for a 1978 corvette light blue color. So the photos looked good. And I called the seller and bought it right then. Well after months delay and I the middle of the night my car arrived via 18 wheeler to my town and when we finally got it off the car carrier my heart stopped for a minute, I was sick to my stomach! End of story, I Love My Corvette when I figured the low price I paid and the excitement of my first corvette I was glad I pulled the trigger I would still be looking for the perfect one. If everything worked on it when I got it I would know nothing about a corvette. Now after working on many items and mostly enjoyed doing it with my son, it was the best car buying decision I ever made...the stress reliever I get when taking it out for a spin and the thumbs up when you go by cars Nd always one question about what color is that? Would not have traded it for anything. Been to several corvette deals and they are in love with themselves they just want your money, Good luck, sorry for the long story, No I do not know anything about Hobby Corvettes. BB 78

Rudy,
Welcome to the club and best of luck in your search. Take your time and your Vette will find you.

Here is a place in my home town that buys and sells lots of Vettes:
http://www.turnerautomotive.com/full_inventory.htm

He has a few C3s right now, but probably not exactly what you are looking for.

Let him know what you want and he will find one. His name is Bill Turner. His son is Tom.

Tell him Dave Wright gave you his name.

Happy searching.

ps- watch out for that ebo character.LOL
