Hello all,

I had my 69 big block painted last August. I took her to a car show about 85 miles away last Sunday and while using detailing wax I noticed what looked like small water drops on either side of the hood riser just above the "4" in 427.

I took her back to the body shop and showed it to the owner and he looked at the underside of the hood and it was doing the same thing in about the same place.

He called me this afternoon and said he called a Corvette supplier that restores Vettes and they said it could be heat related or oil seepage through the fiberglass. He then told me I might have to buy a new hood and that hood would not fit and have to be "worked" to fit. He said a new hood is 1400 bucks! There is NO WAY I will toss my original hood for some aftermarket junk.

I have no idea why he didn't call his paint supplier as it sounds like a paint/prep issue. I also told him I didn't buy the story about oil seepage or heat as there was no problem before this and I am sure GM would have worked that problem back in the C2's with big blocks and engine well heat.

If there is a restorer out there that works with paint and body could give me ideas I am all ears.

I guess my biggest beef here is that it did not do this before it was painted.
The areas are almost identically located approximately 6 inches aft of the 427 emblems on both sides. This is what is weird as if it were slinging of oil it would be further forward and cover a wider area.
It almost looks like something was sat on the hood in that area or it was handled after prep. The paint isn't bubbling as much as it appears to be small dimples.

Oil will impregnate the fiberglass and cause the paint to bubble. I have a couple of spots on my car as well were this has happened. Cars with air conditioning can quite often have this problem on the hood above the compressor from oil slinging off and accumulating under the hood; in time it seeps through the fiberglass.

Paint bubbling up on the hood is normally caused by oil from the bottom seeping up. IF the surface of the hood is prepped properly, that won't happen.
The bottom and top of the hood have to be cleaned thoroughly, and allowed to dry. The top of the hood will probably need to be sanded down, and new gel-coat sprayed.
