I can center the power steering control valve when the steering cylinder is disconnected and slide it by hand as the manual suggests, however when it is hooked back up to the steering it starts to move back and forth as if it was not centered.  Any suggestions??

Hi Dan, I don't know if you are totally insistent on keeping your Vette original for authentication reasons, but I bit the bullet and installed the Borgeson unit (http://www.borgeson.com/xcart/home.php?cat=63) into my C3 and I can say what a difference it made to the steering. It cost me a lot of cash because I imported it into Australia and because of our exchange rate being around 75 cents to the USD and then another $400 AUD import tax it hit the wallet hard but it was worth every cent, not only for the exceptional accuracy in the steering but also for safety. I also installed the Ridetech steering box brace as well (http://www.borgeson.com/xcart/product.php?productid=1761&cat=63&page=1) which I think is a must because of the extra size and weight of the Borgeson box compared to the Vette box.  The only downside was the number 1 header pipe hit the box so I just replaced them with 2 1/2 inch Corvette copy rams horn headers which made no discernible difference to my 380 HP LT-1.

I've done this on my 81 a couple of times now, should be straight forward, so can we first just clarify with some detail what exactly you mean by...

 - centering

 - disconnected

 - hooked back up

Don't want to misinterpret any of this and accidentally lead you astray ;-)

When I bought my 81 had trouble with it pulling. Took it to 2 places for alignment, of course they knew nothing about C3's and could not get it from pulling. Long story short I replaced the ram and control valve and adjusted it by driving, stopping, turn wheels all the way to the right, adjust valve, repeat.

I found the easiest way to fix this problem on a '74 I had was to change out the control valve, I bought a new pre adjusted one from a company in TX and it worked just fine. For a little extra I replaced the hoses at the same time as well.
