Agree with Joel. Anything to do with adjusting the door glass, let em leak. But, any work on a Corvette must bring blood or you have not worked hard enough.

The  dashboard.  All of it.  Any of it.  Nothing worse than thinking you've gotten it all installed, and finding a  light bulb swinging by the wire in the footwell.  Or worse, a vacuum hose that's popped off of the light switch.  Horrible, horrible job. 

I finally got mine installed, working, and looking great and now dang tach stopped working.  

So I'll be ripping it out again soon...  Thanks, Larry Shinoda, for an intuitive and easy to work on instrument cluster!!  (Heavy sarcasm intended)

While I agree with the pita factor of doing dash werk, Shinoda had absolutely NOTHING to do with the interior design, or engineering.
One trick to doing work on/behind the tach/speedo cluster is removing the upper dash pad...you can actually SEE, and get to a lot of crap with that off.

Mine was the complete restoration/mod on the entire 72. It all was a drawn out process. But if I had to pick just one job its the replacing of the rear e brake shoes! Yes the interior replacemet wasnt fun since non of the parts seemed to fit as I would expect. The body work was terrible because the fiberglass gets into your arms and drives you crazy. The bleeding of the brakes can be a nightmare. Yes after reflecting on the restore/mod I would put the whole thing in as the worst job. But in the end I will say it was worth it!
Also I can tell you that I am in the middle of doing a restore/mod to another car that does not carry the Corvette name, It falls into the same category as the worst job! None are worth it until your driving down the road then all bad times are forgotten!

Great idea!!!  But isn't the dash pad bolted in place with an L bracket that you can only get to with the tach/speedo cluster removed?  I can't remember.  I blocked the whole horrible memory from my mind.  I do remember having to unbolt the column and let it hang so I could install the driver side instruments.  The second time I did it (which I swore would be the last time) I had the steering wheel off, which was a big help.

I'm considering converting the speedo and tach to AutoMeter arctic white gauges to match my center stack stuff rather than repairing my inoperative tach.  Very expensive conversion, including going from a mechanical to an electric speedo.  Plus I'd lose the turn signal, bright, and brake indicator bulbs and have to come up with some decent looking way of recovering them.

Nope...just the screws in the defrogger vent, and the screws across the front of the dash cluster, map pocket, and center stack(wiper switch/vent/ gauges). You'll need to remove both side pillar trim pieces, too, but those only have one screw in them, and plastic velcro.
Once all the screws for the upper dash pad are out, and the pillar trim, push up in the center of the dash pad....you'll have to "bow" it up some, since it fits behind the pillar posts. It's really not that hard, unless your upper dash pad is in bad shape, and brittle....if that is the case, you'll wind up spewing a few bad werds if it breaks.

I've had mine out plenty of times with no problems, as well as a few other cars.

Thanks Joel.  I'll give it a shot, maybe tomorrow...  I still can't get my headlights to work, even with every single component replaced (except the light switch).  So it'll be a good opportunity to run that down as well.

The horn and the wipers.  Still don't work although the horn did start blaring while we were replacing the brakes. Haven't heard them since.

I've got a replacement vacuum hose set to put on for the wipers.  I'd rather do anything else -- so I do.

Replace the brake booster. When you reconnect to the brake pedal arm.... Crap...you can burn hours and invent a few new words! And making the plastic Velcro work. I don't think I have any of it working. But I tried...and tried...and gave up.

I have experienced many of the horror stories I read above including dash work, rear brakes, etc., but my worst job was replacing the rear hub, seals and bearings. Not too bad going back together but getting them out was a bear.

Dave reminded me of Effingham  where about ten of us (including you Joel) climbed under the dash of, (if I remember right Bobbiesvet), trying to get the clip on the pedal shaft, and the booster. Now that sucked!! Barb finally gave it a shot and got-er-done.

  YUP! I was under that dash as well. Not a fun time, but it was accomplished in time to travel.   Did one in my garage for another friend. Did my own also. Not a job to look forward to. The BEST way I found is to unscrew linkage from the pedal clevis and not take the clip off. Much easier and less cramping of the fingers.

Ah...so true, but...if ya remember, the issue on this particular car was that the pushrod to clevis threads were screwed up.....we needed to remove the clevis to be able to see that.
Slinky widdle Barb was able to squeeze in there and get that dadgum clip back in place.

Dang nab it you guys are scaring me. Haven't quite finished the garage but once we do my car is going in for a restore.  I'm thinking might have to build piece for the parts and all the notes i'll need to put it back together.

I've got a long way to go, but so far, taking it apart hasn't been bad (only two broken bolts).  The worst part is the current process of scraping the old undercoating off of the fender wells and underbody with a combination of a mild heat gun, a putty knife, and a razor blade.  This is even worse than scraping the paint off the body with a razor blade.  Can't wait to get past this.

I was going to say rebuilding the front end (took me the longest) but so many of the others you all mentioned all rang true!  (e-brake, bleeding brakes, and interior stuff especially).  I've never had any problems with my wipers and my brake booster is hanging in there though.  With these cars I think it's much easier to list the stuff you haven't done - if you've owned one for a long time.
