I seem to remember someone mentioning using a Jeep steering box in a post I read some time ago here. Since a front end rebuild is next on my to do list I am looking at options and pricing stuff right now. I seem to remember something about the ratio being different or something. I'm not sure how bad mine is yet, but I do have some play in the steering. I've taken some lash out of the box after I cleaned it out and packed it with grease. I'm hoping new bushings and tie rod ends and stuff will tighten mine up. I'm just wondering about this Jeep thing. Confused

Well, I'm not familiar with the jeep steering box transfer, but if you don't care about staying factory perfect, rack and pinion is the only way to go. Makes it feel like a new car. I had a close ratio steering box on mine, and though the ratio on the Steeriods unit came pretty close (and it is said to be the tightest ratio on the market) it wasn't quite as tight and I lost a couple of feet in the turning radius, but I love the new characteristics. It's even more fun to drive now. I'll never go back.

I , too, have seen someone here post about installing a gearbox from a Yeep on their Shark. I can't remember who it was, tho...
I'd go with the rack/pinion deal meself, too, if I had to....

My car does not have power steering. What does that do to my options. Do they make a Manuel rack and pinion set up? How much trouble would it be to install a power steering system on a big block with headers.

Just outta curosity why would somebody install a Jeep gearbox? I would think with all of the gearboxes GM has made there would be one similar of the same on another model.

Likewise I would think finding a rebuilt or take off of the same gearbox in a person price range entirely possible.

Only exception would be if it were a hot setup and the were some immediate advantage.

Well Lonnie, the 1st one I ever saw installed was on an early model C3 '68 vert w/427 no power steering (you can order a unit for or without p/s) and headers w/sidepipes. I met the guy at the 07 C3 gathering at Carson City. He came up from San Diego. Don't know if he is currently a member. I'm sure there are others that remember him, his car was pretty popular at the meet. He loved it too. And don't forget "Corvette Specialties" gives a hundred bucks off the price for being C3VR members. Sweet deal.

My  Jeep YJ steering box was made by GM - So maybe the "Jeep"  box was really a GM product
In fact when my Son crashed the jeep and the front end had to be replaced - the repair shop used a straight - GM box -

The particular Yeep gearbox in question is basically a bolt-in deal...no muss/no fuss. It is a power steering set-up that does away with the ram on the bottom. The PS lines run from the pump to the gearbox, just like a "normal" car. It's supposed to be an easy way to install PS on non-power Corvettes, as all of the lower linkage stays the same...no changes....
At least, that's what I've heard.

Thanks Joel I gotcha now..... Circa CJ style..... which were AMC made items I believe. Jeeps historically have been a Hodge Podge of autoparts.

I have never looked at the YJ style guts so I wasn't familiar with them. Although I am by no means surprised it they "borrowed' a few items from GM.

I have built several large CJ's (Not to the extent of Brutha Nutzies Monster) and totally love the versatility of the beast.

Given Joels example I can see where this would be a low budget swap and make good sense for an easy bolt on, non OEM, lookie Maw ah kin turn da wheel wit one fanger kinda mod....... Tuxblacray2009-06-23 03:54:25

Joel if I have this right...I would install a power steering pump and this Jeep gearbox and hoses and that's it? That is certainly an interesting option. I will see if I can get anymore info on this here on my end. That would sure be an option some of us here could take advantage of.

From what I unnerstand, yes...it's supposed to be that simple. I do not know this to be 100% true, so we can't assume that doing anything on a Shark would be that simple...
I'll see if I can locate the info on it somewhere...

I remember seeing threads on this a couple of years ago on the Corvette Action Center boards.  The advantage the Jeep/GM box has over the Steeroids is it is a hell of a lot cheaper.  I think you have to modify the steering arm, but the box apparently bolts right in.

I'm wondering about what year model Jeep this thing would come off of, and did somebody say CJ. Since my Corvette is a 72 I'm thinking maybe about that same era.
