The adjusting nut(brace bolt?) on my power steering pump has sheared off. It appears to be a stud bolt threaded into the pump with an 11/16. This does not want to turn out of the pump. Is it supposed to. I've been looking for replacement parts in the different parts outlets. I do not see this part. Is replacing the whole pump what I need to do? I have three different shop manuals. I don't think this is a regular problem, so, it's not addressed in any of them. Any thoughts on this.

Hey Ray welcome back, it been a while. From what I can determine that stud should come out of the PS pump housing. Finding another one to replace it may be the bigger issue. Here's a link to a site on rebuilding the pump, the stud including the 11/16" nut you mention is in the second photo. Hope this helps !! http://www.corvette-restoration.com/restoration/motor_and_transmission/060813_power_steering_pump_rebuild.htm

Zips sells pump mount studs. Sets of two even, which may be good for someone who may over tighten. I'll order them, but, I'm curious what they thread into in the reservoir. I'll find out when I tear it apart I suppose. Also, it seems that the same pump was used from 63 through 79. Just different brackets. Does that seem correct?

FYI John. I look at the site every day almost. Rarely log in or post. I do keep up on your rebuilding projects. Thanks for wondering.

Looks as though the two studs thread into the pump assembly itself through the reservoir from the back side. Pull those two studs out along with the bottom fitting and the pump assembly pulls out of the front. If Zip has the two studs, I'd say your good to go as long as you can get the ole one out. According to Ecklers the pumps themselves are 1963 to 1974 and 1975 to 1979. The studs may go all the way from '63 to '82. Small block and BB pumps are the same just different brackets. Actually never had one apart myself, but that website makes it look pretty easy. Good luck !!

I was just looking for the online debut of the new paint job !! Pics, lots of pics. Back on the road I hope, well until this PS pump thing. I remember when that color came out in '73.

How old is the pump?  Might be a good time to just replace it while you have it out.

The pump is 43 years old come November, plus however long it sat on the shelf. Low miles though. The car still has less than 15,000 on it. It works well, just can't tighten the belt. It was probably me that damaged it. 10 years ago or so, I replaced all the original belts and hoses, spark plug wires, plugs, etc., with all date coded replacements. I probably over tightened it. I'm famous for giving bolts one extra little turn. Maybe that's Infamous!
