I am dropping the steering column in a 1974 Coupe to replace the Dash harness.  I have followed the article by Jim Shea and I cannot get the column flange to separate from the flexible coupling.  I have the back drive lever lined up with the hole in the dash.  The column will move from side to side but not back.  Did I miss something?  Thank you for any advice you can offer.

the rag joint is rivited to the steering box half of the coupling, the column side coupling is bolted through the the rag joint to the front half of the coupling , remove the two 3/8" bolts and it should  come apart, you can also remove the column by removing the pinch bolt on the back half of the column side coupling and sliding the splined column shaft out of the coupling, that the way my 72 is.

I certainly cant add much to anything Jim Shea wrote but if removing the bolts that hold the two sides of the coupling together does not allow the coupling to separate, you may need to loosen or remove the  PINCH BOLT that tightens the splined half to the steering shaft.  A little gentle prying on the  GAP once the pinch bolt is removed should allow the shaft to separate from the coupling.  Be sure to mark the coupling and shaft so you can get it back together in exactly the same location.

Thanks for the input.  I finally got the column to separate  with lots of PB Blaster and a pry bar.
