How wrong can usual practice be?

Not only car owners but also tire shops and vehicle service centers believe putting new tires on the front wheels as a practice for decades.

This research-video by a renowned tire manufacturer proves beyond doubt that the wrong conception MUST be changed!

Therefore, insist on putting the two new tires on the rear if you replace only 2!

Thanks Larry, make sense. Cool video, would not have thought the car would break loose at such low speed.

Nice clip Larry......

You can only buy 2 tires? I haven't bought just 2 tires since I bought those Mickey Thompson L60's for the back of my Camaro in 1975......

Tux I bought three once Big smile Had them drop the spare, mount it with the other three and put the best old one on the spare rim. Hate to never use that brand new spare!

Can't see the video, but....
This really all depends on how bad the "other" two tires are. If they are junk, or worn, then it really doesn't matter which end you put the new ones on...the other two are still gonna be worn, and subject to boo-boos.
Another problem is mis-matching new tires with old...different brands, rubber compounds, and tread patterns can cause handling issues, too.
I'll have to check out the vid from the shop, and see what it am, but....I will continue to put the new rubber on the end that steers...

Were those front or rear wheel drive cars? I have to believe that makes a difference too...

I've always put new ones on the drive wheels. Lately I've been replacing 4 at a time.

Generally, the video is true.  But I have some exceptions.

This is worse on a front wheel drive then a rwd.  The weight of the car, end to end, makes a difference.

They made the statement the driver can feel the slippage on the front, and not the rear.  A good driver and feel the rear slip.

The video with both cars on the track at the same time is a bit deceptive.  The front car did not correct steering and held steady state.   The rear car WAS steady state, the changed.  Watch closely, the driver tweaked the steering, throwing the rear out and causing the problem.

Some maintain the front must have steering protection.  Some say that the front tires will kick up debris that could damage a worn rear tire that would have survived with a new tire.

What about stopping?  New on the front will be better.   What about accelleration traction?  FWD or RWD.

Generally speaking, they are correct, but sometimes it is not the case.  Try stopping on a curve with any car with the better ones on the rear.   Severe disapointment will follow.

I also am suprised to note that they do not recommend replacing tires in sets if the safety is that drastic.   It is always better to rotate the tires and then replace 4 at the same time.

Does this imply that tires 1/2 worn are always unsafe, if all 4 are worn?  Of course not, but the implication is there.

What about cars that are heavier on the rear?   That will change things quite a bit.

Just some things to think about.     Again, they are basicly correct, but there are some glaring variations to consider.

Don't forget AWD vehicles.  You run the risk of doing drive train damage if you just replace two tires.  'Click and Clack' backed that up in an answer to a question on their radio show a couple of weeks ago.

Rotate the tires on a regular basis and replace all four when the time comes.

I 100% aggree with rotation then changing all 4 tires when it's time to do so. I never changed only two........always the four...much safer way to go. Very interesting all of the responses.

Since Norsky brought up AWD...did ya'll know that as little as 1/4" difference in the circumference of the tires can create a problem with the transfer case? This could be simply from less/more air pressure in one or more of the tires, different wear amounts, different brand tires, or even different tires the same size, from the same manufacturer.
This makes it REALLY important to change all 4 tires on AWD vehicles, not just 1 or two at a time. And...just so you'll know, there is a big difference between AWD, and 4wd...
I'll take a look at the vid now...

Interesting...what a sales pitch, eh?
Like Ken says, there are simply too many variables to definitively say "This is the right way to do it".
Did ya notice they say, "This car has new tires on the front, and tires with 50% tread on the rear"...but....they don't say how old the tries on the rear are, or how hard a compound they are, or are they street tires/mud-snow/all-weather, etc? And you CAN see the guy in the blue car tweeking the steering wheel BEFORE it starts sliding around...
Is is good info? Yeah, prolly, in some instances, but not always. Kay-Sara Sara....Adams' Apple2009-04-20 19:33:04
