I  installed new front wheel bearings, races and brake rotors this past week.  The drivers side went great but when I tried to install the hub (with new races and rear bearing installed)  on the passengers side, it wouldn’t go onto the spindle.  After removing the rear bearing from the hub I found it would not slide onto the spindle, the front bearing wouldn’t go on either.  My caliper showed the bearings to be the same diameter to the one thousandth of an inch (the limit of my calipers). Both old and new bearings were Timken and were marked with the same number as the old bearings.  The spindle looked “OK” with no burrs or galling.  It took a few minutes with some 1500 grit paper  wrapped around my finger on the inside diameter of the bearings to get them to slide on.  My guess is that my spindle was out of spec a ten thousandth or so.  Has anyone ever encountered this before??

The guy who does our suspension rebuilding puts every spindle in the lathe to check runout.  He says a surprising percentage of spindles are bent just a bit, and really ought to be replaced.  You should probably be safe and take yours apart and get it checked. Or at least check the bearing to see if it is getting hot after running a while.

The inner diameter of the bearings are a tight, toleranced fit onto the spindle. They can be really snug sometimes. The fact that you could "polish" the ID of the bearings and get them on tells me that you prolly just had some kind of debris, or a small burr on the bearings. Those bearing races are pretty hard...1500 grit paper prolly wouldn't do much more than clean the surface, without removing any substantial material.
A bent spindle could make it hard to get the outer bearing fitted with the hub assy on, but it wouldn't effect installing one bearing at a time onto the spindle.
I've had to "tap" a few bearings into place a few times, but it is simply due to the tight tolerance between the ID of the bearing and the spindle surface. I'd say your situation was fairly common. If you saw no indication of damage to the spindles, such as heat(blue/black), or galling, you're prolly ok to go.
Do the hubs/rotors turn easily when installed, with no "binding" in any area?

Thanks for the replies guys.   Larry I will check it after I run it a while for heat buildup.  Yep, Joel, they spin free with no binding at all.  I was just surprised after the drivers side fit prefectly.

A difference of .0005" on the spindle diameter can mean the difference between sliding on freely and having to tap it on.
They actually should be a snug fit, not loose.
Sounds like you are OK.
