Hi Patrick,

I'm going to assume the seats bolt into your '81 much the same as in my '70.  There should be 4 bolts, 2 in front and 2 in back, to hold down each seat.  Slide the seats all the way forward to remove the rear bolts.  Then slide the seats all the way back to remove the front bolts.

Before removing the drivers seat tip it back a bit to locate the electrical connection and disconnect it.

To re-install the seats just reverse the process.

Good luck...!!!

Wouldn't the cushions (and covers) be able to be detached from the seat frames?

When I see "seat covers on foam" for sale I imagine that removing the old ones and replacing the new ones would involve snapping them in/out of place.

Kevin, that's an option, although if the seats are in good shape, and with the right preparation, interior dyes are very durable (and a lot less expensive)

Snapping in and out in the car could be a real challenge. I'd highly recommend removing the seats and doing the work on a bench. Also gives the opprtunity to clean and lube seat tracks and dye plastic parts...lukesvette2010-05-26 03:26:37

Patrick,  not sure about the older C3s but if your 81 is like my 82 the drivers seat will have 4 nuts with integral washers which are accessible from the bottom of the car.  The bolts for the passenger side seat are accessible from the inside of the car.  On the passenger side slide the seat as far forward as possible and take out the rear two bolts then slide the seat back as far as possible and take out the front two bolts, the passenger side comes out easy.  The driver side is a bit more challenging to get out because of the wiring for the power seat.  Once my drivers seat is unbolted I tilt it a bit toward the console and reach up to disconnect the power seat connector.  The first time you do it you will have to figure out how to pull the connector apart, its not difficult, but requires a bit of dexterity while balancing the seat in its tilted position.  I  cover my door entry sills  with an old towel to keep from scarring them and it keeps any grease or gunk from the seat from soiling my light colored carpet.  I agree with what Kevin said above, the seat cushions can be removed from the shell but it can be a bit tricky the way they are clipped into the shells.  I thought I had some pics showing how they attached  which would make it easier  for you to visualize but havent been able to find them. OHHHHH be sure that when you put the drivers seat back in the car that the seat back IS NOT folded flat on the seat bottom  but is resting on the steering wheel or completely upright.  If you dont do this you cant unfold the seat to sit down because the steering wheel is in the way.    NO... dont ask how I know this.Ermm
