Ok dumb question number 1002?

I got the old pad off and getting ready to install the new dash!  The old pad had an opening on the bottom just under the steering wheel where you slide it over above the steering wheel and then a 4by6 cover screwed into the bottom of the pad to make it look like one piece.

The new pad does not have this opening its solid on the bottom and I'm pretty sure it will not slip over the steering wheel!

1. its solid piece just to hold the dash pad together for shipping?
2. You must remove the steering wheel...never
3. Its sliced on the outside as if your to cut it off before installation and then you can slide it over the steering wheel and then used the bottom cover piece that you had for the old dash pad.

I think its number 3, but just curious why its there in the first place, its not very sturdy...No other way I see that the pad can go over the wheel?

Any one put one in recently with the answer or suggestions on the new installation would be greatly appreciated!

Pretty much is how you say. If the old one doesn't have that piece then just remove it. I work in plastics and it is done all the time. Lots of parts will warp in shipping if they are not held together during shipping.

Mine came that way and it is number 3.

I had to get a can of dye to match the dash with the interior of the car as it was not exactly correct. But I have a 82 Collector Edition.  Just a heads up as I had to remove the dash after installing it because I never thought the color would be off.  All in all I had to take my dash off 3 times if I remember correctly before I got it done.

Things to think about before you put it on:
Color correct for the interior.
Heater core in good shape.  If it is not new why not replace it now. If you replace it later you have to take the dash out again.
Heater and AC if you have it switch works good
All light bulbs have been replaced with new ones.

By the way I have a great source for light bulbs PM me and I will try to find it and send it to you or anyone else.  Just do not know where the web address is at now.
