I' m a newbie here, I hoping for some of the forums expert advice. I have a a 1974 coupe with a 4 speed. I have pulled all the seats and carpet out. My original plan was lizardskin coating then some foil backed insulation. The PO. Sprayed some type of liner in the floor already, the folks at lizardskin claim it must all be removed to spray their product. Is that worth it or if I just cover the current coating with a quality insulation (dynamat or fat mat) will that provide the right amount of heat protection? Thanks in advance for the help.

Are you sure the coating you see on the floor is from a PO? The factory did spray sealant on the floors, mostly around the seams, but it differs from car to car, depending on how the guy doing it that day felt. My '74 has a rough surface sealer/insulation applied pretty much over all of the floor, but it is not uniform...it's kinda haphazardly done. It is all factory applied. If it is original, it will have body color on it, If it don't have any paint on it then it is something that was applied later.

I would go with just using the Dynamat, or some other insulating material of your choice....unless you just really want to spend a couple of weekends scraping whatever it is out of there, and then applying the Lizzard skin stuff. If you decide to scrap the old stuff off, be very careful to not remove any of the factory sealant in the process.

First welcome. You will find many good people here that will be more then happy to help. I have been down the road your heading on. First let me say, save your old carpet till you put your new carpet in. It will be a great help when you need to know how much to trim and where to cut. You can compare your old pieces to your new ones. It will be a big help. As for the lizard skin, I have it on both my vettes and I highly recommend it. I has done more for keeping the HEAT off my feet then any other thing I tried. Now if you decide to use it you will need a special sprayer to spray it. Dont buy one as I will let you borrow mine. All you have to do is take care of the shipping costs. I have pics of my floors if you are interested.

I am not sure why you couldnt spray the lizard skin right over the other stuff that is already on your floor panels. Its going to spray over the seem coating so I dont what difference it would make. Its a shame your not closer as I have about a 1 1/2 qts of the lizard skin left that you could try.

It has been over a year since I started. I had to quit the project so the car just sat in the garage. I was able to get started again in May 2012. As of July 27 2012 I have done the fiberglass repairs and applied Slick Sand High Build Primer.

Last winter, I took the interior out and did just that; removed the factory coating.  I was planning to only replace the carpet, but the project got a little bigger.

Awesome write ups, I was thinking a lot about using relectex in the back and a quality adhesive matting in the front. Is anyone using the vette nuts pre cut insulation kits? They are on sale right now but I can't find many reviews. D

Lots of different options are available for you to choose.  I decided to go the Dynamat route.   I spoke to a tech at Dynamat and he told me that the Dynamat has to go directly onto a clean surface.  So I removed all the factory applied sound damper material with a heat gun and a sharp 2" scraper.  Afterwards, I cleaned off the remainder with odorless mineral spirits.  Then applied Dynamat and rolled it down tight with a small 1.5" wide wooden roller from my wallpaper tool box.  Then, I applied 1/4" thick Dynapad on top.

First of all big ole welcome to our family Dennis.I'm a simple kinda guy. When I tore my carpet out I bought a box of scrap heat shield, sound deadner stuff from Mid-America and made my own insulation. This lizzards skin dynomats stuff overwhelms me. All I can say is before I did this you couldn't wear sandals without burnin your foot. Now no problem. Be careful of the glue you use though. Stuff I used reminded my of my days back in the 60's then  I got this big ole headache.

Ok, I think I decided (hopefully I placed an order).  I ordered the vette nuts deluxe kit with foil insulation and Ensolite IUO insulation.   Next I ordered the MAMO carpet kit to go over the top of the insulation.  Has anyone ordered a complete interior screw kit?  Any thoughts on who has the best kit?

Pics to follow, the insulation kit wont ship till next week so it will be some time before I get it.  Thanks again for everyone's opinions and advice.

i've purchased complete intweior screw kits from both ecklers and corvette america. i'm glad i had two kits as i waa putting mine together because for me some of the screws in each kit weren't right. but with both kits i had options.and yes i will have a bunch left over. good luck Rodney

 I purchased some of these long straight picks from Snap On, (Stock #: PSLR4-3 ) can find cheaper ones I'm sure, when they did the install at MAMO they would find the screw holes and poke these picks thru the carpet and into the screw hole that held the carpet in proper placement, when they wher ready they removed the pick and put the screw into the spot where the pick was. Worked real nice.

I'm reading my post from last night about the interior screw kits and I have to laugh. I was on my way home from a Nationals game last night when I wrote the reply, riding in the back seat with no lights on. Looking at it I didnt do very well! What I was trying to say was that I ordered 2 kits from 2 different suppliers. Glad I did as some screws from each kit wouldnt work so I had choices of the extra set. And its never a bad thing to have some extras left when your done for a future task!
Oh, by the way the Nationals won and that Harper kid is the real deal! Shame hes not a Yankee!

Got my screw set from Corvette America & I agree...some of the screws are a little different, never thought of just buying another from a different suppliers (duh).  BTW - MAM carpet is really nice - got floor mats & a matching cargo mat last year when we were there - get alot of compliments on them.

More help needed. I received the new carped and insulation. I know there is a leak so I tried to find it before installing the new stuff. The area around the wipers (wiper cowl?) is leaking when the water pools there. There is already some sealant in the area. Should I remove all the old stuff and Reseal it? Is so what should I use? Can I use like a roofing tar or something similiar? Thanks Dennis

Leaks can be tuff to find! When I did both of my cars I coated to whole inside wiper area with POR15. This is an epoxy paint and I used the gloss black. I like the way it looks but the factory wasnt a gloss. With the epoxy it should seal a leak if there is one. Where does your water come in at? Is it in the bird cage area? Hopefully not. Im not home until Sunday night or I would try posting of pic of what it looks like done in the gloss. I put it on really thick and heavy also. I dont know about resealing it with any other sealer. Hopefully others will throw some input your way on this.

Thanks Rod, I actually have some POR 15. That is a good idea to start with. I don't think the leak is in the birdcage area. I'll try to get some pics today. Some guys are using spray in bedliner. Still researching what to use.

Leaks!  My '73 carpet was pretty smelly when I took it out.  I found that the rear glass was loose and the two rear drain tubes were both cracked.  The drain tubes I'm talking about drain the chamber behind the rear window.  I would post some pictures, but I can't get it to work on this site.

Thanks, I will check the drain tubes and rear window.  I know the wiper tray is leaking.  I completely cleaned the tray today.  The PO had a lot of stuff in there (putty, sealer, ect)  The wire mesh at both ends was completely sealed up with sealer.  So water would just sit in there, of course it leaked.  I am going to use Spray in bed liner and redo the whole tray.  I am also going to fix the wire mesh so the water drains properly.

Thanks Dan, I am itching to get the carpet in.  I need to fix the leaks first.  I have some pictures I am going to upload tomorrow morning.  I am going to use Eastwood brushable seam sealer first (on order).  Then I am going to spray the whole tray with rubberized bed liner.
