I' m a newbie here, I hoping for some of the forums expert advice. I have a a 1974 coupe with a 4 speed. I have pulled all the seats and carpet out. My original plan was lizardskin coating then some foil backed insulation. The PO. Sprayed some type of liner in the floor already, the folks at lizardskin claim it must all be removed to spray their product. Is that worth it or if I just cover the current coating with a quality insulation (dynamat or fat mat) will that provide the right amount of heat protection? Thanks in advance for the help.

Welcome Dennis!
Few questions....
  • Are you putting new carpet set in?
  • If so did you already purchase the carpet set?

Yes, I'm putting a new carpet set in. I have not purchased it yet. I was leaning towards the carpet from midamerica. Any thoughts? Dennis

Are you sure the coating you see on the floor is from a PO? The factory did spray sealant on the floors, mostly around the seams, but it differs from car to car, depending on how the guy doing it that day felt. My '74 has a rough surface sealer/insulation applied pretty much over all of the floor, but it is not uniform...it's kinda haphazardly done. It is all factory applied. If it is original, it will have body color on it, If it don't have any paint on it then it is something that was applied later.

I would go with just using the Dynamat, or some other insulating material of your choice....unless you just really want to spend a couple of weekends scraping whatever it is out of there, and then applying the Lizzard skin stuff. If you decide to scrap the old stuff off, be very careful to not remove any of the factory sealant in the process.

Welcome to C3VR, too!

Dennis, Joel is going the same route that I would have suggested....see I just did not expect him up so early on Saturday....must be cookin moma breakfast Wink i would not be trying to get that stuff off, it's a good base use it.
When our group went to MAMO for our gathering they did a free carpet install on one of our members cars. There carpet sets are top of the line and come with the heat shield on them.
They also used the mating like Joel said.....
Also in their catolg they offer a box of dynomat scrap pieces, they take those smaller pieces and cover every little spot.
Search "Carpet Install" in the search box and you will find lots of post's, I'm sure you will be well prepared for the adventure! Thumbs Up
Good luck with the project, document it and keep us up on the project, we all like to learn more and more about our C3's
Hope you find the site usefull!

Dennis,
First welcome. You will find many good people here that will be more then happy to help. I have been down the road your heading on. First let me say, save your old carpet till you put your new carpet in. It will be a great help when you need to know how much to trim and where to cut. You can compare your old pieces to your new ones. It will be a big help. As for the lizard skin, I have it on both my vettes and I highly recommend it. I has done more for keeping the HEAT off my feet then any other thing I tried. Now if you decide to use it you will need a special sprayer to spray it. Dont buy one as I will let you borrow mine. All you have to do is take care of the shipping costs. I have pics of my floors if you are interested.
Good luck,
Rodney

You guys are all awesome!  I have been on forums for jeeps, old trucks ect, and the hospitality here in one day is great.

Rodney,

Thanks for the offer on the spray gun that would be huge.  I still have some research to do before I pull the trigger.

The current liner that is in there covers the whole floor including the area beneath the center console.  No paint overspray, so I guess it was a previous owner install.

I watched the video with MAMO on my classic car, I am sold on their carpet.

Is anyone just using Dynamat?  I would hate to install it then be sorry I didn't use lizard skin.  I know the to completely clean the whole floor will be  a huge undertaking.  Still undecided, definitely thankful for all the input and hospitality.  More to follow, I have never worked on corvettes, so there is a big learning curve.   Most my work is on Jeeps.

Thanks
Dennis

Dennis, the install that they did for us at MAMO just used dynomat and their carpet set.

Now I'm going to go off topic for a bit here on your thread so sorry about that....

About this site, this is the norm here, we all love our vettes and are a very, very, tight family. We have gatherings every year rotating from coast to coast, west, mid, east.
We all try and get to the yearly gathering just to meet each other and put face to name.
On top of that the members close to each other within 4-6 hour drive do some seperate gatherings a few times a year. Even in the winter without our vettes just so we can see everyone.
So welcome to the family, I was as impressed as you and signed up for a Gold membership right away, then after 6 months decided I wanted to be here forever and went lifetime.
Thanks for noticing that we are different...Wacko
Looking forward to your projects, bring em on! we are here for you!
Evil Smileebo

BTW last gathering was in Charleston, SC this past May.

I am not sure why you couldnt spray the lizard skin right over the other stuff that is already on your floor panels. Its going to spray over the seem coating so I dont what difference it would make. Its a shame your not closer as I have about a 1 1/2 qts of the lizard skin left that you could try.
Let me know if I can help in any way.

Read this thread. You guys are awesome. The only site I've been on where people are like this is the songwriting site I frequent.

Lizard skin? MAMO? Floor seams?

So much to take in.
I haven't even thought about my 74's interior yet.

But I already have some things to think about thanks to this. I will need new carpet but I never thought much about spraying the floor before hand.

It has been over a year since I started. I had to quit the project so the car just sat in the garage. I was able to get started again in May 2012. As of July 27 2012 I have done the fiberglass repairs and applied Slick Sand High Build Primer.

Last winter, I took the interior out and did just that; removed the factory coating.  I was planning to only replace the carpet, but the project got a little bigger.

The original coating was pealing, so I didn't want to spray anything over; had to remove the old stuff first.  I tried a few different methods; dry (with a scraper), chemicals and finally; heat gun.  The heat gun with a 2" scraper worked really good.  I only removed the coating on the floor pan and elbow area.  Not the back seat area as it appears to be a different kind of coating and it was not pealing at all.

Under this original coating, you will see other kind of seams (roughly done mind you); those you don't take off.  That's what glues the floor pan to the body.  I'm really glad I took the coating off of mine; because I found 1 big and 2 small areas needing repair at the seams that I would have not seen if I had not removed the coating.  I would push on the floor pan with a finger and be able to see the ground at the seams.  It has cracked and separated.  An epoxy cocktail followed by some fiberglass patches did the job.

Then I sprayed the area with a beige rubberized spray coating (3 coats). (Non-asphalt based product unless you want the smell).

The step after that for me was to add some kind of heat insulation (on a budget); so I opted for this foil product sold at the big home renovation stores (reflectix).    I also purchased a carpet set that has extra rubber and extra jute padding on it.  That's where I stand now; I have not put back the carpet in yet.

Long story short; if your original coating is not pealing; leave it there and add some heat insulation; such as lizard skin (all the way up including firewall) and verify you don't have any separation at the floor.  You would want to fix this before you put the new carpet in!  The good news is that our floor pan (74) are not metal; so we don't have to deal with rust!

Steph.

Awesome write ups, I was thinking a lot about using relectex in the back and a quality adhesive matting in the front. Is anyone using the vette nuts pre cut insulation kits? They are on sale right now but I can't find many reviews. D

Lots of different options are available for you to choose.  I decided to go the Dynamat route.   I spoke to a tech at Dynamat and he told me that the Dynamat has to go directly onto a clean surface.  So I removed all the factory applied sound damper material with a heat gun and a sharp 2" scraper.  Afterwards, I cleaned off the remainder with odorless mineral spirits.  Then applied Dynamat and rolled it down tight with a small 1.5" wide wooden roller from my wallpaper tool box.  Then, I applied 1/4" thick Dynapad on top.
I also did some work under the floor.  Years of oil leaking softened the factory applied undercoating so that scraped off easily.   On other areas I tried Eastwood's chemical undercoating removal spray but that didn't do anything.  So I used the heat gun and scraper again and got areas that were relatively easy to access.  Then I applied some "Zero Clearance" insulation above the areas where the exhaust pipes are.  Overall, it's a lot of work, but now it's done and I have moved on.  The car is still on jack stands so I can't offer any performance information.  Maybe I'll get it going by next Spring.....

Good luck to ya,
John

First of all big ole welcome to our family Dennis.HugI'm a simple kinda guy. When I tore my carpet out I bought a box of scrap heat shield, sound deadner stuff from Mid-America and made my own insulation. This lizzards skin dynomats stuff overwhelms me.Confused All I can say is before I did this you couldn't wear sandals without burnin your foot. Now no problem. Be careful of the glue you use though. Stuff I used reminded my of my days back in the 60's then  I got this big ole headache. Wacko

Ok, I think I decided (hopefully I placed an order).  I ordered the vette nuts deluxe kit with foil insulation and Ensolite IUO insulation.   Next I ordered the MAMO carpet kit to go over the top of the insulation.  Has anyone ordered a complete interior screw kit?  Any thoughts on who has the best kit?

Pics to follow, the insulation kit wont ship till next week so it will be some time before I get it.  Thanks again for everyone's opinions and advice.

Dennis

I purchased some of these long straight picks from Snap On, (Stock #: PSLR4-3 ) can find cheaper ones I'm sure, when they did the install at MAMO they would find the screw holes and poke these picks thru the carpet and into the screw hole that held the carpet in proper placement, when they wher ready they removed the pick and put the screw into the spot where the pick was. Worked real nice.
They used a 3M brush on glue and yes it did have a High smell. They let that glue flash for quite a while also. We made Terry (my71T) put both hands in his pockets...just to be safe Embarrassed
Keep taking pictures!

I'm reading my post from last night about the interior screw kits and I have to laugh. I was on my way home from a Nationals game last night when I wrote the reply, riding in the back seat with no lights on. Looking at it I didnt do very well! What I was trying to say was that I ordered 2 kits from 2 different suppliers. Glad I did as some screws from each kit wouldnt work so I had choices of the extra set. And its never a bad thing to have some extras left when your done for a future task!
Oh, by the way the Nationals won and that Harper kid is the real deal! Shame hes not a Yankee!

I'm glad I had two kits as I was putting mine together because for me some of the screws in each kit weren't right. But with both kits I had options.  And yes, I will have a bunch left over.

This is exactly what happened to me.  I bought one screw kit from Zip, and then accidentally bought another kit from Wilcox.  I'm glad I had two kits, but I still came up short on screws that I thought should be black.  BTW, the light bulb kit is handy too.

Got my screw set from Corvette America & I agree...some of the screws are a little different, never thought of just buying another from a different suppliers (duh).  BTW - MAM carpet is really nice - got floor mats & a matching cargo mat last year when we were there - get alot of compliments on them.

More help needed. I received the new carped and insulation. I know there is a leak so I tried to find it before installing the new stuff. The area around the wipers (wiper cowl?) is leaking when the water pools there. There is already some sealant in the area. Should I remove all the old stuff and Reseal it? Is so what should I use? Can I use like a roofing tar or something similiar? Thanks Dennis

Dennis,
Leaks can be tuff to find! When I did both of my cars I coated to whole inside wiper area with POR15. This is an epoxy paint and I used the gloss black. I like the way it looks but the factory wasnt a gloss. With the epoxy it should seal a leak if there is one. Where does your water come in at? Is it in the bird cage area? Hopefully not. Im not home until Sunday night or I would try posting of pic of what it looks like done in the gloss. I put it on really thick and heavy also. I dont know about resealing it with any other sealer. Hopefully others will throw some input your way on this.

Thanks Rod, I actually have some POR 15. That is a good idea to start with. I don't think the leak is in the birdcage area. I'll try to get some pics today. Some guys are using spray in bedliner. Still researching what to use.

Leaks!  My '73 carpet was pretty smelly when I took it out.  I found that the rear glass was loose and the two rear drain tubes were both cracked.  The drain tubes I'm talking about drain the chamber behind the rear window.  I would post some pictures, but I can't get it to work on this site.

Don't give up!

Thanks, I will check the drain tubes and rear window.  I know the wiper tray is leaking.  I completely cleaned the tray today.  The PO had a lot of stuff in there (putty, sealer, ect)  The wire mesh at both ends was completely sealed up with sealer.  So water would just sit in there, of course it leaked.  I am going to use Spray in bed liner and redo the whole tray.  I am also going to fix the wire mesh so the water drains properly.

More to follow.

Thanks Dan, I am itching to get the carpet in.  I need to fix the leaks first.  I have some pictures I am going to upload tomorrow morning.  I am going to use Eastwood brushable seam sealer first (on order).  Then I am going to spray the whole tray with rubberized bed liner.

I am using insulation from Vette Nuts (the kit looks pretty good).

I am searching for a set of fiero seats and am ordering a Shark Bar (so I can run a 5 point harness).

If I can find fiero seats I may save for some Corbeau A4 seats (big investment).  My stock seats are shot........Another big investment to repair.

Mamelukesword said: You guys are all awesome!

Thanks
Dennis

Very cool I'm looking forward to seeing this project myself, I have to do the same thing..
I guess I'll use you for a guinni pig Wink
My factory coating (painted) is pealing as well so I'll have to scrape mine, I'm still trying to figure out what I want to do for carpet as well...

Me coming from a Jeep world as well I just sprayed mine and left the drain plugs out.....wash
and wear :)LOL
