Hay All,

A friend of mine just bought a 73 coupe. This is a work in progress.
The 1st thing he can't figure out id how to stop the key buzzer...it just won't quit.
Any ideas?

Does the buzzer stop if you shut the door?  If you take out the key does it stop with the door shut?  What I am getting at is the door switch working..do the interior lights stay on all the time??  or are the bulbs burned out or removed..

If it is not the door switch(s), it is most likely the switch in the column is suck/bent/damaged. Could possibly be a shorted wire in the column, also, but the contact switch is more likely. Getting to that switch requires removing the steering wheel, and turn signal switch.
The actual buzzer is behind the speedo-tach cluster, towards the top dash pad...easy place to get to...NOT!

I would guess the switch is just sticking..it's just a small piece of metal with an insulator on the end...I think it's brass..it's setup like that doctor game that you get a buzzer if you touch the sides when you take the guts out..old game I had when I was a kid..can't remember the name but..anyhow I am guessing that the part is ok just touching the sides..I haven't seen this part on the list of repair kits for the column online but it may be the same part used by GM for many years..I would do more diag before I went after that switch first..with tilt and tele it's a little work to get down to it..may be a wire inside the column anyhow..

Like Rich says, the switch contacts may just be stuck. They are just two simple brass reeds that touch with the key in. I have one I can take a pick of, to give you an idea of what yer looking for. The pic above doesn't actually have the switch in it. If could also be the little tab on the key cylinder that is not retracting when you remove the key. An operation will be needed to get to the source, and being a T/T column will make it more challenging, but by no means impossible for the average feller.

My 68 has a courtesy light switch in the door (hinge area) So when you open the door the cortesy  light comes on and if it is still open when you insert the key, the buzzer goes off. My ign switch is in the dash and not in the column. If you get a bad ground in the door courtesy switch the buzzer will go off  all the time.
I am not sure about your year car, but before I would tear into the column and if you do have this switch, I would check this out first.

Our steering column expert says to remove the lock tumbler.  If it stops buzzing, the problem is that tab on the tumbler.  Just replace the tumbler assembly.  If it still buzzes, it is the buzzer switch.  No one is yet reproducing them.  Any GM with T&T from 68 to 76 will work, but they are almost impossible to find.

But...you can't remove the key cylinder without removing the steering wheel. (except the '68, with the ignition in the dash)
Unless he knows some secret way to do it...and if he does, he should share... Big smile

There's a possibility that the wire for the buzzer has come loose from the door pin-switch, and is shorting against the body. That's the first thing that was mentioned, and the easiest to check. Just because the courtesy lights work fine doesn't mean the switch is not at fault, as there are two wires on that pin-switch...one for the lights, and one for the buzzer.Big smile

The black wire on the door switch is for the buzzer the 2 white ones are for the lights. I agree this is the best place to start.
The ignition lock cylinder has a tab on the bottom that closes the contacts on the key buzzer switch. When the key is inserted it pushes on the tab, I have seen these tabs get stuck from dirt and debris and keep the contacts in the closed position. This will cause the buzzer to sound only if the door is opened.
Posting the exact conditions of when the buzzer is operational IE: with door open/no key, with key/all the time, all the time/regardless of key or door, etc will help us point you to the best place to start looking.
