Ok got the battery back up and running and must been the alarm/hood up switch so shorting out somewhere horn not working so I am pulling the interior door panel off and  fix the lock, alarm, glass snubbers, etc?????

I have not checked the past post for how to do this( previous mistakes made and little hints that make it go easier) so any info on step by step process. I have a 78 electric windows so no windoe handle to fool with but the porper way to dismantle to get to the lock and glass snubbers and I think a rod is not connected to the door lock knob and the door key/handle so might be some work to do.  Any photos or instructions would be a great help...Thanks BB78

You are probably ahead of me on the panel removal but if not, the panel itself is not difficult to remove.  There are 5 screws total, I think, holding your 78 panel on if its like my 82 and I think it is.  Two of the screws are in the bottom of the armrest. The third screw is clearly visible near the top of the panel close to the outside door handle.  Forth is on the lower left corner of the panel . The final screw is INSIDE of the map pocket on the door panel.  Once the screws are off the panel can be pulled out slightly at the bottom and lifted UP to lift the panel off of the door.  You will need to push the panel toward the front of the car slightly to allow the lock knob rod to clear the hole in the door panel.  IF you have power door locks, dont lift too much, only enough to get your hand behind the panel to the power door lock switch.  The large flat plug that attaches to the door lock switch can be stubborn to get off, just be gentle and work it back and forth to pull it from the prongs of the switch.

It's been a while since I have worked on my door lock and have NO pics of the interior of the door panel so Im not going to be much help on the interior part.  Once the door panel is off most of the guts are visible with the window UP and out of the way.  The snubbers arent difficult to get to and the connecting rods just need to be traced and determined if they are still attached.  There is an access panel that unscrews to allow more access to the lower portion of the door interior.

The rear view mirror control is screwed to the door panel you're removing so, once you've removed it's screws it can be turned diagonally and slipped back through the panel.

Ok Ihave all the screws out I can find but the panel is still attached (driver panel) upper right and lower right and I have tried to move it up and to the right but something is not giving... I have the mirrow control out and the door lock rod to the manual door lock knob and cann not find the screw inside the map pocket but something is holding it tight on the right side by the hinge  side of the door. I dont want to yank it off but it seems like some screw is still in or its adhereed to something..??? any suggestions before I break it???? THanks bb78Disapprove

Mark, the map pocket screw on the '78s is located inside the very top front of that pocket. you should be able to feel it through the carpet with your fingernail. Don't pull hard on the panel, those boys are pricey. It should come free fairly easily if you lift up first, once all the screws are out. Good luck. Once you've been there, it's not so bad.

Yes thanks I got it, not easy to spot but did find it and now the inside cover is off. the next step is to get to the lock and alarm wiring but most important to me is to be able to lock the car and neither car locks wrok. Its manual locks but the key just spins int the socket so need to remove more covers to see whats happening... any advice I will accept is ther any surprises in taking the next couple of screws   out to remove the next layer so I can get to the lock??? those that have been there before??? let me know thanks bb78

Sorry, haven't had the door latch/lock mechanisms out yet. I've got one of those to do also on the wifes car. Passenger door, go figure. I would have thought that side would never wear out since it doesn't get much action. I'm not sure which screws you're refering to.

ok dumb questions #1002 I got the interior carpeted door cover off thatnks for your help and now I can see the alarm platic circle 2 white wires jsut hanging there not connected... when I got the car I had a locksmith make me a door key since I did not get one  but it did not work either but now I know why... with the key in and turn the key will utrn 180 degrees right ot left but no resistance so I am guessing the lock is bed but further I think the lock is ok but there is nothing on the lock to turn and move the door lock rod, I believe something is missing on the back of the lock and then the door alarm  plastic coupler is attached to it...maybe the Door Lock Cylinder Pawls is this wher the push rod is connected so when the key turns it turns this cylinder also the alarm plastic to off/on and the push rod to open /close if someone could let me know I'm onthe right track I'd appreciate it..

but then the next question Yes there is an opening to see the back of the lock and to see the 2 bolts from top that connect the door release know from the top and the push rod 2 bolts holding this in. but I do not see any screw or bolt holding the attachment where the key cylinder would attach to .. so how do I get the next setion of the interior door off???? Yes I see several screws but they appear to be holding the window guide rails and I dont want to fool with them and the lower black panel for I guess the pwr window motor and electric panel , so how to I get to the access of the key lock to either put a new key lock in and attach the alarm harness and attach the cylinder pawls that will turn the door lock pushrod when I turn the key as its just spinning now.. how do I get the next layer off withoout getting into trouble... I need to get a push rod  connected to the key holder and see if I can get pwr to the alarm wires..Thanks sorry so long... boy I love this corvette stuff but should drive it more. please help???

The back of the lock cylinder should have a hollow metal tab sticking out. There is a short locking rod on the door latch mechanism that should ride inside the hollow tab. Not sure of the connections for the alarm as I have disabled mine since I do not plan to leave the car parked publicly on a long term basis. That also cured a lot of my battery draining issues...

Godd luck

I think I just found the tap at the bottom of the door. you were talking about , just if I could find a photo or diagram of the parts from the lock to the end it would help greatly and the order of attaching... I see the rod coming down but no connection to the key cylinder so no way to unlock or lock the door, but where does the white ring for the alarm go around the cylinder.. Threr are some missing clips but to get a diagram of all the parts and order of assembly for the driver door alarm key socket would help... Don't know what parts to order if yo dont know which parts are missing??? Thanks for your info will keep plugging away!bb78
