New member to C3VR and could not find the answer to my question.  I have removed the door panel and can see the old motor.  The window is in the down position. How do you remove the window motor? If this question has already been answered please point me to forum location/answer.

If the window is down, it's gonna be hard to do. The window motor is connected to the regulator by rivets. Your best bet is to get the Factory Service Manual for your car, or perhaps someone here with a '78 manual can look up the procedure for you. If memory serves, the regulator assembly has to be removed from the door to access/replace the motor.
Have you checked everything electrical to determine the motor is bad? Sometimes, the motors get rusty, and quit working, but a nice friendly tap on them with a small mallet(hammer) will get them going again for a while...at least long enough to get it raised to the up position. I've also had some measure of success by slamming(not hard, but firm) the door closed with the power window switch pushed.
You also want to check the connections, and the wiring harness where it goes thru to door into the hinge pillar...it can sometimes have a break in the wiring there, since it flexes every time the door is opened/closed.

I have tried tapping the motor with no luck.  I have also checked and I have 12volts at the motor when I work the window switch.  I do have the 1978 service manual but it does not help.  It warns that you must lock the regulator before removing the motor. It seems imposible to lock the regulator if you cannot move the window all the way up.

Thanks but I had already been at this web site.  Since I cannot roll down the window 1/2 way, how do I get the holes to line-up in the main regulator gear?
