Speedometer quit working this weekend found that the plastic end of the cable from the tranny to transducer had broke off in the transducer, tried to spin the transducer but it was really tight and then would spring in the opposite direction, my question is should I just try replacing the cable or should I replace it and the transducer?

If you want your cruise control to work you would have to replace the transducer. If not, you would have to get a cable to go from the speedo to the trans. It sounds like your transducer has bit the big one! BTW, those transducers are a PITA to replace.

The transducer is done for. Replacing the cable will only twist the end off the new cable. The transducers get moisture in them, and rust up, and the grease used on the gears gets hard/gummy. That is what causes the thing to lock up, or get so hard to turn that it twists the end off the cable.
You can get a cable to go directly from the trans to the speedo head, but then you wont have cruize.
So...either replace the transducer, or do without cruise. You might find a place nearby that rebuilds the transducers, but those places are few and far between.
