Yep.  I'd like to get a damaged left or right grill from a '70-'72 car to practice a weld repair on before I attempt it on my own.  I could even use a broken piece off of one to practice with.  Anyone know where I could find something like that?

Thanks in advance!!!!

Hey Roger,
Take a look at; C3 General Discussion
"NOT for the faint of heart!!!
It was posted by Adam on July 28, 2007. Lots of wrecked Corvettes there!
Possibly they'd have what you need.
Best of luck with it!

Joel:

It's the right side front grille of my '72.  If your are looking at the front of the car, mine is cracked starting at the top left and going vertically down just to the right side of the leading chrome surface.  It extends down to about where the first mounting screw is then then it crosses over into the chrome section.  Oops at least that's how it was until I accidently broke the entire piece off while examining itCry.  Now I have to re-attach the broken piece back onto the grille.

My brother Phil took the grille and the piece I broke off over to Al's Chrome in Ft. Worth this week to get it un-chromed.  He called this afternoon to say it is ready and he is picking it up.  After that it is practicing on another broken one (or piece of one) before attempting the repair on my own.  If that goes well then I fix mine and if it looks good enough then back to Al's Chrome to be re-chromed.  Then paint back to NCRS standard and voillaClap!!!

At least that is how the story goes in my head.  Hope it turns out that way.

I talked to Phil this afternoon, Roger, and he filled me in on what ya'll were doing.
I'll look around here this weekend and see if I might have something for ya'll to get some welding practice on.

Why don't you just get replacement NOS grills?  I got some on Fleabay.  NOS GM Grills (3) for less than $100 still in the box...........never know what you can find on there!Wink

Thanks Joel!  I appreciate itThumbs%20Up.

Hey Mick, I've been looking for weeks and the cheapest NOS grille I saw was $385.00 and that was just for one sideShocked !!!  Also, for NCRS purposes, all of them have the fiber optic hole in them.  If I buy another grille I would need one without the hole as mine is a '72.

Well someone on the Corvette Forum website sent me a busted piece of a 1970 grille.  I've practiced using the Durafix product www.durafix.com to make similar repairs to what mine will need but thus far have not been successful enough to try it on my own grille.

I may try the muggyweld product www.muggyweld.com to see if that will work.

In the meantime, I scored big time on a front grill set on eBay.  Got a 1972 right side grille (without the fiber optic hole in it - perfect for my NCRS purposes) and a 1970 left side grille.  Both are in amazing shape.  Got 'em both for $71.00 including shippingClapClap  Sorry but the left side grille has already gone to another Corvette buddy here in Texas.

Micki, nope soldering gun wouldn't do the trick.  What I really need is someone who can weld aluminum diecast as that is what the '70 - '72 grilles are made out of.  If I can get it welded, rechromed, and painted then I'll have me a good spare or else sell it to someone else who needs oneWink.
