My tach quite after driving down to Rodneys yesterday..it does move a hair up and down..I removed the end from the distributor..should there be a machined piece on the end or not..and which way do I turn this to see if the cable is ok..don't want to damage the tach by spinning it the wrong way..and the dern speedo is stuck at 22mph..will go higher but not lower..I can handle that one ok..its just a pita to have both die out at the same time.

Can you see if you have something busted off where it goes in?

Nah Barry..you only need that if you don't know how to put in the distributor..I think I can remove the cable from the tach and see if it turns..hopefully it didn't break in there!

Hi Rich, I had the tach on my '69 350/350 go out due to the brass drive gear in the distributor stripping. I replaced the gear and it soon went dead again. It turned out that the distributor shaft splined gear had one chipped tooth. I went with an electric SUN tach after that!

The tach cable end that goes into the dist should be pressed into a square...no attachments or anything...just cable. I'm kinna thinkin like Joe...it may be the driven gear, or the dist shaft is damaged.
The speedo being stuck, or not going lower than 22 is certainly a problem in the speedo head itself. Once it does start registering, is it correct, or is it off?

Ok so today I ran the car so I can see inside the little screw on spot where the tach goes ..no spin..so I guess its a rebuild the distributor time..looks like the parts are cheap..should be fun..and Barry..I will take my mechanical over electrical anyday!

Come on Rich, you know I didnt do it! did i tell you my tach in the 72 doesnt work and I needed some parts! Hah it works now! lol
Hope you get it workin, How did your show go today? Where were you at? Next week they have the one at the ice cream place in Red Lion on Sunday. I might sneak up to that one with my parents. Have to see how the weather is. Someone said that the one at Sonic starts this month as well.
Let me know how your distributor rebuild goes. Mine needs done as well. Gear doesnt drive the cable.

Ah you know how these old cars are..they just break for no apparent reason..I was at Sonic today..maybe 75 cars I guess..actually a few cars I haven't seen before..is that ice cream place where Dealin Daves was? He threw some great times in there when he did that party once a year.. burnouts and beer..I have the parts list started..might shoot for the end of the week..or next..to rebuild..wish this crap would happen when its winter time...

Be VEEEEWWY Careful with that tag!!! They will self destruct quite easily!!
The tag has the part number, and date on it. The part number identifies what engine the dist is set up  for, so be sure the tag stays with the dist, even if you have to put it in a small box, or bag somewhere, so it doesn't get damaged.

Yer shaft is toast, fer sher....dangit. Also, be careful when replacing the bushings in the dist. There are a LOT of them out there that are not the correct O/D, and lots of guys are busting their distributors pressing them in...they are too large. If there is not very much play in the shaft on the bushings, I wouldn't mess with them....my opinion. You don't wanna end up with a busted dist housing, too....

I noticed the tag was very thin..I may leave it off and put it with the POP and other paperwork..be honest with you about the bushings..they really don't feel bad..they just had them and the install tool to do them..so I bought em..I have to wait and see how the new shaft fits in there before I go that route..still..how does one get them out??? That looks harder than install!! Anyhow what's the opinion on using the new shafts cam?? I have found that it used to be removed off the old one and brazed onto the new one..is this really necessary? ? Anyhow I will wait on the new shaft..
Anyhow what's the opinion on using the new shafts cam?? I have found that it used to be removed off the old one and brazed onto the new one..is this really necessary? ?
I've never seen one like that myself. Sounds kinda goofy...why the heck would someone do that, anyway? I could see doing it if you had a tach drive shaft, and needed a new cam, so you would steal one off a non-tach drive shaft, but...sounds a lot like something we would do back in the day, when we would have a ton of parts laying around gather dust, and no $$$$ to buy anything we needed. Can't see having to do that with the reproduction, and aftermarket suppliers out there these days.

You'll have to cut the old bushings out, if you do need to replace them. A really sharp chisel will do if yer careful. Check with yer Snappy or Matco guys...they have special bushing cutters...basically weird looking chisels.

The shaft from the '74 danascar has would work, too...

From what I found is GM used 38 different advance cams between 68-74 so I guess the thought is that changing them will keep the stock advance curve..idk..I think if it looks ok I will use the new one and be done ..I can always modify the advance hole stop if need be..I do have a question about a stop button that can be installed into the stock housing..pn X2557 in the CA catalog..you have to machine the housing and install this brass bushing into it repairing the housing..one of those parts that I had to have..don't think my housing is all that bad but it would make a permanent repair..anyone done this??oh and I have to say ordering parts around 10 am and having them on my front door by 9 am is a wonderful thing! Really am starting to be a CA parts fan.

How can you order parts at 10, and have then an hour before(9) you ordered themQuestion By golly, THAT'S some DANG good service! What...they readin yer mind er sumptin?

I've never heard of the cams on the dist shafts being different...unless we're talking about two different things. I'm thinkin you are talking about the cam that the points rub on...right? If so, then afaik, they're all the same.
There are different advance vacuum cans, of course, and different weights, springs, and slots on the mechanical advance dohicky....all of that is removable/changeable.

Well I just got lucky with the order then..they are only 80 miles from my house..so if they ship the day I call I get it the next morning..the part I am talking about is welded to the top of the shaft itself..advance cam..not really a big deal..I am now trying to put in the brass plug for the gears to ride on..fun fun..will post pics once I figure it out..

I think what Joel meant was that you probably ordered the part at 10 PM, not AM. As he said, you can't get parts BEFORE you order them! Anyway, hope it turns out OK.

I would just like to say how much I enjoy reading threads like this one.

He started with a problem many of us can assume we will have, posted his way though it and even posted pictures.

Glad its all fixed.

These are fun ones aren't they...both your cars unless changed will have the tach drive in it..if it works ok it wouldn't hurt cleaning it out and putting fresh lube in there..the button I put in mine is a factory part in your cars..except I think its a plastic or rubber material..or it may have the brass button also..ya never know untill you take it apart..another thing that can be touchy is the angle at which the cable is..they sell those 90 degree thingys that are made for guys who put the distributor in 90 degrees off..the vacuum canister should point to the PS fender..which makes for a straight shot out of the distributor..getting these right really isn't all that hard..but if done wrong they can really kick you in the behind..plus they don't run as good...I love my points!

Thanks again Rich. Really wish I was making the Gathering as that 69 is one of the cars I would love to see!
