Please keep in mind with this that I am not the most "handy" person when it comes to tools.  I recently got an '07 Silverado, and while it is very nice, I continue to want to make slight changes to make it mine.  So far, all I've done is install some tinted LED tail lights (the truck is black and I'm trying to black it out as much as possible).

On e-bay now is a C6 Horn button that the seller says would be a direct replacement for the bow tie emblem on my steering wheel.  The description notes that it's a very easy installation - after the old one is removed.  Sure, but removing the old one requires disengaging and removing the driver's air bag.  YIKES.  For a novice like me, that sounds really scary!

I know the C6 logo would make for a very cool, custom look, but I need to hear from some of you.  Is doing this even safe?  If it's safe to R& R the air bag, how difficult would it be?  In one of the truck magazines I have, there are instructions to do it as part of a steering wheel replacement project and it doesn't make it sound that difficult, but again, that's probably for people who know what they're doing.

Oh, and assuming you all say "go for it," the seller wants $60 for the horn button.  He says he has "a number" of them and "once they're gone, they're gone" but they have been for sale for over a month.  I'm thinking of offering him no more than $25-35.  Anyone have an idea what a realistic price might be?

Thanks guys!!

What do ya'll think?

I will offer a bit of warning advice when dealing with airbags...they can blow up in your face. If you do not have the service manual for the truck, I wouldn't depend on a magazine article to give you everything you need in the way of removal/installation instructions for an airbag. Even disconnection the battery will not completely de-activate the bag, as it has what is called a DERM...or Dam Energy Reserve Module(not the real name of it, but you get the idea). It's purpose is to have a "reserve" amount of electrical energy to deploy the bag, even if there is no battery/power connection to the bag. Those bags ain't cheap to replace, either...
Scared yet?
Some bags also require special sockets/tools to remove them. Don't know about the '07, tho. I can get you the correct/safe procedure for removing the bag if ya want. I'll have to e-mail them to ya later tonite.
Remember...you're dealing with a component that might possibly save yer life one day.Wink

Yep Joel, plenty scary.  I figured that would be the case.  I guess I'm going to take a pass on the horn button, although it would have made me smile every day.

Thanks.  I knew you would "steer" me in the right direction!
