I honestly don't remember what I learned to drive in Confused  it was either my friends first Ford F350 or my dad's Country Squire Station Wagon LOL  My first car that I actually wanted and went out and bought was a Maroon 72 Chevelle Thumbs%20Up  I bought it from a a friend who said someone had out a 350 LT1 in it.  At the time I didn't even know what an LT1 was, all I knew was the car hauled arse Wink

My first car wasn't cool, it was a black 49 Chevy four door that I shared with my mother.  Dead   I was 15 and she drove it during the day to work and I used it at nite to go to work and on dates.   It had an old 6 banger with 3 on the column.

I traded my SL70 Honda and $25 for a two door "63 Impala when I was 14. Changed the engine and painted it before I was 16 and able to drive it.  In the meantime I learned to drive in a '59 Impala wagon.

I learned to drive in My fathers 55 chevy pickup. It was wrecked, we found another for parts, I moved all the body parts from one to the other and got it back on the road. My father gave it to me for my first vehicle. It was my high school cruiser.

Like some of y'all I 1st learned ta drive on a Allis Chalmbers tractor. (That is iffn the crank didn't tear all the skin offa my hand tryin ta start it.)

I then bought a nice 49 Studebaker pick up. This was my driver for some time. I sold it and had 3 vans before the 1st car came along. 67 327 4spd Camaro... sold it for a 383 slapstick 4spd Cuda.... then big 4wd trucks graced my muddied up world until I decided to take a load off of my weekly breaking of truck fund and buy a vette. Since then my life has been lower, cleaner, and a lot less abusive.... Life is Good!!!

OK.. you are not gonna believe this but I probably drove the ugliest car on earth, but as my Dad once said "the worst kinda drivin' beats the best kinda walkin'". I learned and took my drivin' test on a 1960 Saab station wagon, baby blue... you had to put a quart of oil in the tank first and it mixed with 7 gallons of fuel (2 cycle). It had 3 cylinder motor, with a 4 spd. on the column, front wheel drive, it free- wheeled when you let your foot off the gas, so you could actually shift without the clutch. Being 2 cycle it smoked like hell at an idle and you also know what they sounded like until you got the RPM's up (put...putt...putt...) It had 7 moving parts and got about 35 MPG. When I took my driving test the inspector was so amazed at the column shift I think he forgot to look at my driving.. My Dad said it was suppose to be one of the strongest/safest built cars of it's time. It was like a little tank... 3 Years later He bougth a SAAB GT... that had oil injection and 3 carbs (one for each cylinder), but still had 4 spd. column shift... that little bugger would run now... being 2 cycle the higher the RPM the better it liked it... NOw how would you like to take your prom dae in that... mine actually thought it was pretty cool... I had that car until I went in the service... got out and took all my pay i saved and bought a  "GREEN" '69 Vette, vert, 350/350, with 4 spd... YIKES.... oh yeah.. my brother took the Baby Blue SAAB...  2 cruzn2008-09-04 20:50:54
Ok here's the scoop. About a year before I turned 16 my parents were trying out used cars. One day my dad drove up with a 1964 Olds Dynamic 88 2 dr. Coupe, with a 394 super rocket V-8, 4 bbl. carb, rated at 325 hp. Man I tell ya what, I licked my chops for a whole year until I got my license. Little did mom and dad know that their grocery getter could trany slam and lay down rubber for a whole city block. Plus turn low 14's in the quarter. Well soon after I got busted fer reckless driving, daddy took the keys away.
After the Ford Wagon went caput, it was replaced with a 66 Olds Dynamic 88 4 door with a 425.  YIKES!!  I had two very uncomfortable experiences in that car.  One, I friend dared me to just stomp on it out in the middle of the street.  That car whipped posi and I was up in a yard in nothin' flat.  Just missed a fire hydrant!  Two, I decided to take it up to 100 mph in the local neighborhood (like I said, we weren't the smartest bunch).  When I finally got to the main cross street (the one I was supposed to stop at), I hit the brakes and they did not respond.  The car slowed and I rolled right through that intersection (thankfully, no one was coming from either side at the time) and finally came to a stop in the church parking lot that was on the other side of the road.  I do beleive that was the last time I allowed myself behind the wheel of that car.
Marshall, I learned to drive on a 1962 Plymouth Valiant, slant 6 push button. Could not get in much trouble there.
I then bought for my first car a 1969 Barracuda fastback 340 formula S. 4speed Hurst snake shifter. It was a dark green metalic.

Painted it the same color of "Soapy Sales" funny car back in those days (early 70's)

Plumb Crazy Purple (there u go TJ) with a light Lavender wide Hemi stripe down the center of the car. Of course over the big Hemi scoop on the hood.

Sold the thing for my first bass boat, and have regreted it every day since.OuchCryCry

Thanks for the memories......

I'll find a picture and scan it in. Evil%20Smileebo

Ebo,

My buddies dad had a pea green Valiant with the same HYPO package you described here... it was radio delete and had studded snow tires on it...

Our 1st outing at 16 yrs. of age in it was to travel to another town 18 mi. from here to get a battery for his dad. We put in the portable cassette player an down the interstate we went.

Cruising along this dude in a Vette blows up along next to us. Kevin accelerates up and the Vette dude is looking at us smilin... 60... 70... 80.... (Vette dude is laffin)... 90 .... 100 ...(can't hear the cassette player anymore for the singing of the snow tires)... side by side down the road..... Arrrggghhh RED LIGHTS

Pulling over I I can hear is Kevin groanin... "My dad is gonna kill me... My dad is gonna kill me... Oh man my dad is gonna kill me...!!!"

We get stopped and the trooper walks up laffin so hard he has tears runnin down his cheeks.

A. Because we are both scared sh*tless
B. Because he said that had to be the stupidest funniest thing he had seen.

This was immediately followed by "What the He77 were you thinkin?"

All said and done he gave Kevin a warning ticket for goin 90 in a 70 zone. Kevin practically kissed the trooper for that....

We never knew what the Vette dude got outta the story... Quite frankly it was all about us at that moment....

I still laff (like right now) when I think about it.... Stupid Kidz ..... Geeezzz.....!

Since we're talking Mopars, I'll relate my funniest story about my Barracuda.

Buddies and I were out one night fishtailin around in the snow when I got a flat.  The 13" tires were on five lug rims and the one that was flat already had one lug busted off.  I went at the wheel with my four-way lug wrench and after a  moment or two...  "SNAP!"  Another lug bit the dust.  Granted, the car was almost 20 years old at this point, but none of us thought that would happen.

One of the guys says he'll give it a try.  He goes at one of the three remaining lugs and guess what - "SNAP!"

At that point, we decided to give up and walk home (it was only about four or five blocks).  None of us were too comfortable about riding around in a car with two lugs on the wheel, assuming we could get the others off.

So, how many of you have figured out the problem?  I'll give you a hint - the flat was on the rear tire of the driver's side.

If you don't know the answer, you won't beleive it...

Here it comes...

At some point, some genius at Chrysler decided it would be a good idea to put left handed lugs on the left hand side of the cars.  So, when we thought we were loosening the lugs, in fact, we were tightening them to the point where they just snapped off!  Later on, in the daylight and after I was told of this Einstien idea, I was able to see a clear "L" on the end of the driver's side lugs and an "R" on the other side.

My first car was a 58 Plymouth Savoy that my dad used for a work car. He bought a used pickup and gave me the Plymouth. Thinking back it was a nice car, had the 318 with push button, blue and white, but I beat it to death being 16. After that I bought a 61 Ford Galaxie and drove it for a few months before buying a 64 Comet Cyclone. The Chevys were cleaning up on me so I bought a 66 Fairlane GT 390. Had a lot of fun with that car and it could turn 13.60's with street tires. Had 66 Mustang Gt, 65 Chevelle, 66 Chevelle SS396, and my last real fun car before I got married was a 68 Nova SS 4- speed. I bought it used off a car lot and it was crazy fast.
In 72 I got married, but wish I could go back and know what we know today.
