"BIGBRRD" (our '78 TransAm) has a Borg-Warner T-10 4 speed with a Hurst linkage and shift stick.  Before taking the car apart for the restoration when shifting into reverse, 1st or 3rd my hand would usually come in contact with the dashboard.  After getting everything put back together I adjusted the throw on all three linkage rods (reverse, 1st/2nd, & 3rd/4th) so there was a little more 'daylight' between the dash and the shifter.  I did make sure I moved each the same number of turns.

Since making that adjustment two things have started happening.
  1. More often than not it is difficult to get it in or out of reverse.  It is like something is binding and not letting the reverse lockout allow the shifter to slide left or right.
  2. When driving along in 4th and letting up on the accelerator it will occasionally pop out of gear.

Any thoughts on what I inadvertantly screwed up by simply loosening, repositioning and retightening the nuts on the linkage rods?

Yup.
The shifter needs to be adjusted in "Neutral"...adjusting the individual linkages to move the lever away from the dash in 1-3-R will throw the shifter gates off.
The shifter has a small notch, or hole in the side of it for adjustment. Each of the three shift slide also have a hole. These holes are for aligning everything. You can use a small drill bit, or allen wrench to line it all up after removing the linkages from the shifter.
I have a pic of the shifter set-up somewhere...I'm trying to locate it....
Ya don't wanna keep driving it with it jumping out of gear...it will damage the teeth on the gear, and the synchro coupler.

Well...apparently, the pics are on a disc. I'm off to werk, but I'll post them when I return, if it'll help.

Great Joel. I've got the Hurst comp. Plus linkage for my super T-10 in the '81 yet to install, and my buddies say it's a real pain, so any visual education would be a big plus.

HERE ya go, fellers! Hope it helps!

Jim, what prolly happened is, when you adjusted the linkages to move the shifter handle back, away from the dash, you caused the shift gates to no longer be in line, when in neutral. Also, moving the linkages to the rear would keep the lever for 3rd-4th from going completely into 4th, which is causing it to fall out. There is a LOT of space between the synchro sleeve and the input shaft(4th gear) on Muncie and BW units...it's just the way they are. Anything that keeps the sleeve from fully engaging into the input shaft will cause it to pop/fall out of gear.
Another thing...IF you have the bolt-on shifter handle, make sure it is pulled BACK on the shifter as far as it will go, and then tighten the two bolts. The handle will move forward/aft if you loosen the two bolts a little...this may help keep from bustin knuckles...
hth

Thank you SIR...!!!  I was hoping I could do this from under the car and it looks like I can.  Just didn't want to pull the center console out - again!

I moved the jam nuts about 3/4 of an inch to get the shifter away from the dash some.  Guess I'll have to give some of that back.

It doesn't have the bolt in stick - wish it did as I can't get the darn thing to pull out of the linkage.  I've tried all kinds of different things based on feedback to a post I made on a Firebird site but no go so far.

Thanks again Joel...!!!  Thumbs%20Up  Clap  Thumbs%20Up  Clap  Thumbs%20Up

Well I think I got it readjusted ok.  It was a little too cramped up in the tunnel to use a drill bit or an allen wrench so used a round head screw that fit perfectly.  It has been raining today so didn't want to get "BIGBRRD" all messy by going out for a test drive.  Just moved a little back and forth in the garage trying all the gears.  Seems to go in and out of reverse a bit easier than before.  The shifter is a little closer to the dash in reverse, 1st and 3rd than I'd like it to be but it isn't as close as before.

Mange takk...!!! (Norsk for Many Thanks!)
