When I renewed my regular plates this year, I noticed that the Indiana BMV site had a special area for personalized plates.  I didn't have time then, but I appear to have quite a bit of time today...

This is really cool.  For Indiana residents, you can check to see the availability of a plate.  While I currently have MAN GET1, I was considering changing.  Unfortunately, HIO SLVR isn't available in virtually any spelling combination that makes any sense (if you have ideas, I'd appreciate hearing them).  I did check out some other options and combinations though and was surprised to see what was available.

For you Indiana folks, the site is https://secure.in.gov/apps/bmv/mybmv/Default.aspx

For folks in other states, I'm not sure if you have this option, but you might check it out.  It could save you time and hassle when trying to get plates, if you're going for the personalized option.

But, when I got my plates for my Pacer Car my first two choices that were ok on the internet were not when I took in the application.

Marshal you state sux LOL  You have to create an account, put in your Driver's License Number, and Last 4 of your SSN  Confused

Mark, you're partially right.  MY state (Illinois) is awesome.  However, at times, my adopted home of IN is a little on the sucky side.

QWKSLVR is not available.  Thanks though

Marshal, i don't know if you are aware of it but those personalized
plates cost $48.00 PER YEAR. YOU have until Nov. 30 to lock it in.
You are allowed a total of seven letters and numbers. I have two sets and
the price doesn't make me happy, a little stiff! Nothing you can do.

No offense to anyone from IN, I was just joshing with yas LOL  I just thought it was weird that they wanted all that info just to look at a possible license plate.

Butch, I believe I pay $70.00 a year for my SWEET78 plate that I hardly even put on my Vette anymore  Confused

They have probably changed things latley but the way it used to be the Licenceing Office in Downtown Seattle was the only one who could give You a Yes or No answer on the Spot for personal Plates. But it don't much matter anyway the New Personal Plates are Cheap looking now they look like sombody made them on there Printer at home. Have You noticed that the plates arn't even stamped anymore. Plates used to be Custom made for Custom Cars and say something about them. Now they are just Printed but since most of them are on a Prius anymore in Seattle today its fitting.

I know Mark.  No problem.  The IN BMV has always been a little wierd.

When I first moved here, I was reviewing the "restrictions" on the back of my driver's license.  I had restriction "A" which meant I had to wear glasses or contacts.  However, among the restrictions (on driver's licences, recall) was restriction "Z" - this was classified as "Blind."  Go figure.

Butch, unfortunately, I'm well aware of the extra $48 - I've been paying it for a couple of years.  I've never had a personalized plate before on any vehicle I've had.  Back in Illinois, as long as you got at least one number in the plate, you could personalize for free.  Not sure if that's still the case - it's been a few years...  I just figured if I'm paying extra, I thought I'd see if there was something else interesting to put on the car.

By the way, I did also discover that Indiana does allow the use of a license plate from the year the car was built to be registered to the car.  I know I could get one on e-bay, but in looking, the plates from 1974 very clearly show "75" since that's when they expired.  That would just be confusing as far as I'm concerned.  Otherwise, it would be cool.

ND has a similar system, without having to enter all of the info. Normal plates are $73 and personalized are $82, so it makes sense to get them. I guess that's why I've seen more personalized plates here than anywhere else. Don't know why ours are so expensive compared to others. Guess with the small population, they have to make money somehow!?!?!

UPDATE!!

As noted above, I checked and HIO SLVR was not available.  However, driving one day, the thought hit me and I checked the site, substituting a ZERO for the capital "O" (I checked and plates do not have a hash through them to distinguish - an "O" looks almost identical to a zero!!).  Guess what - it was available!

I've ordered it and should see it in March (yes March!! Apparently the prisoners only take special orders for plates after the holidays!).  Here's a preview of what it should look like (without the red stripe):

I guess I'll have to wait for next year for C3VR.COM
