Went to my local Chevy dealer parts counter to get something for mama'a 98 Malibu. Front wheel hub assembly. Guy wrote up my order and sent me to the cashier. Got up front, had to take my glasses off to read the bill, and saw 'list $280, my price, $280". What!?
Went back to the parts desk and plopped the part down and said I'll pass for now, I know I can get a better price, and you're charging me LIST!!?
He he'd and haw'd and said something about what he's SUPPOSED to do. Then he got back on the computer and came back with $203. Sounds good to me!
Then he said I did look familier, and when I said I'm usually in for older Corvette parts he remembered.
Then he took a business card and wrote "wholesale$$" on the back and signed it. And said, don't be shy, ask for the discount.
I've only been dealing with this place for a year or so. Previous place quoted me list for an item once and wouldn't budge. Bye bye! Looks like I'm set now!
With money tight right now(home construction is in the toilet!)every savings helps.

I usually get GM parts from one of the online parts houses.  They can always beat the dealer price.  Now our Corvette club is sponsored by a local Chevy dealer who offers us discounts, so I'll check them out as well.

Howdy Mike....I know what ya mean, I just got nailed by Rik's on shipping. Twelve  bucks to ship 4 0z. of product. I'm gonna call em on it.

I'm just about ready to use that pressure bleeder you helped me with. I'll let ya know how it works.

I sometimes order from GM PartsDirect but this was an instance of wanting to get it done right away while I have my sons car to use for a few days.
And some of the shipping charges can get ridiculous. Needed a plastic inner fender panel for the Malibu. $25 part. GM PartsD wanted $50 shipping cause it was big. Hood mat for the Vette? They wouldn't even ship it.
Just nice to have a good local connection.

Yeah you have to watch the shipping charges at GMPD; sometimes they negate the savings.  There's another place (don't know if I can post up a non-sponsor's business) that catered to the LSX crowd that charges a bit more on parts but also has reasonable shipping rates and good customer service (I sent GMPD an email once and still never got a reply).

Always mention a company name.........even if you make it up yourself. Just say that you're paying cash, and the state's taxes on the part. Another trick is to find out when the regular parts guy is going to lunch. Offer to take him to lunch (just don't wink or do anything weird because he might think oh-no). So buy the guy lunch, a bottle of pop, candy bar, or anything to make freinds............after that...........you get the best discount.........and best service that you can ever hope for. Just don't let him date your girlfreind or wife........I wouldn't go that far.
