I can't find a good spot for this. Seems like this is the best for now.
I've got a 1986 F150 XLT with the 5.0 in it. The truck is old but only has 34,000 on it, 10,000 are mine. It won't start and I don't have much knowledge with EFI engines. If someone can tell me how to trouble shoot this I might be able to fix it myself. I guess the fist thing I need to do is to find out if I'm getting fuel and no spark or spark and no fuel. On older car you can just poor some gas in the carb and see if it starts and go from there. Any help I can get would be great!! I reall need to get this truck running!!!

Is it cranking? Sounds like it is if you're about to check for fuel and spark. That's a good place to start. How old is the fuel filter?

These guys here are going to ask for more info like, Is the engine turning over and are the battery and cables OK? When was it last run? How old are the Plugs, Wires, or Fuel Filter? It could be a bad fuel pump also. Of course look for the simple stuff first. Hope that helps.

I had an 88 150. Sounds like it's the on board fuel pump. Does it "whine" a bit when you turn the truck on.(not turning the key all the way) It will probably only happen for about 2 maybe 3 seconds. If it does I'll agree with the others say fuel filter. If the truck is that old, when you get it running, you may want to change the tank(s). There could be a build up of rust and crud that will only give you more problems in the future.

I'm sorry, I really didn't give enough info. I got the truck about 2 yrs ago. This problem just happened. It started cutting off and acting like it was running out of gas, or maybe an electrical something that started going bad. It wasn't ongoing, it happened like right now, and I had to call AAA.. Right now it will turn over real good. It's not battery related. I can't smell gas but I'm not sure you would if you have EFI?? I hope it's not the fuel pump. I drive this all the time. When I got it, the shop had just finished doing a bunch of stuff to it. They did the brakes, tune up, wipers/squirters, EFI clean, some other things. The bill was $2,350. I bought the truck about a month later for $ 2,500. The orginal owner I bought it from only used it for truck stuff. Dump, hardware store, ect. Thats why it had low miles. The paint was tried but it has no dents, no trim missing. It's one of those 80's style trucks. All kinds of chrome/stainless trim, two tone paint. The interior is perfect, even the crushed velour seat!! (disco down) I'm telling the back story so you will know that it wasn't drove into the ground.
Is there a way to put some gas into it to see if it runs for a few seconds. Thanks for reminding me about the filter.

Take the intake hoses off the throttle body. Have someone try to crank it while you spray ether in the throttle body. If it starts, the problem is probably the fuel pump and/or filter.

If it does not try to start, you probably have a bad TFI module on the distributor. It takes a special torx tool to change it, two fasteners I believe. This is very common on these trucks. I have changed mine three times on my 89.

[/QUOTE] The module is something I have thought about also. When you say a special tox tool to remove it are you talking about the torx screw driver? Or maybe a socket? Iv'e got the screw divers, I also have a torx socket that I use for the seatbelts. Is that maybe what I need. I don't have the right size socket but I'm pretty sure ACE does.

Go to a parts store and tell them you want a Ford TIF module tool. It is the only thing that will fit in the recess. They are not expensive. I ground down some sockets and torx bits to make them fit. It ain't worth it. Buy the right tool.
