Wendell Strode, National Corvette Museum director, has personally asked me to let him know if I had any ideas on how they can increase attendence at what is now the Classic Corvette Reunion - targeted to C1, C2 & C3 Corvettes.

I thought it would be a great idea to ask all of YOU for ideas and then pass them on to him.  I'm only one person. I'd only be able to come up with one or two ideas (maybe three). However, if I open it up to you all, maybe we can come up with a couple dozen ideas for them.

Please reply to this thread and after we get a bunch of good ideas together, I will forward the info to Wendell.

Let's show them that the only worldwide club for C3s only can help with this call to action!

Thanks gang!

It has been two plus years since I've been to BG and I doubt that the format/agenda of gatherings have changed much in that time span but... Make it something special and folks will come.  (I know, I know - that's the purpose of this thread.)

One suggestion that the NCM doesn't seem to want to budge on is the date.  It is just too late in the year.  Most folks have already scheduled their vacation time for events that are held earlier in the year when the weather is more likely to be nicer.  I know I'm "preaching to the choir" on this one.

The other is to PROMOTE it...!!!  There is a HUGE ownership base out there, especially now that it includes the first three generations.  Yet there just hasn't the press given to this event that the more established events get.  The established events pretty much advertise themselves.  It's the lesser known ones that need the exposure more.

Not much for suggestions I'm know.  But personally I doubt I'll get down to BG until the 15th anniversary gathering in 2009, unless something really special comes along before then.

I have been to three years of these and I am not sure what would be a big draw for more C3 owners.

Maybe if there was going to be a fleet of C3 concept cars on display at the Museum during the month of October. Mako I, II mock-ups GM used to develop the Vettes.

I enjoy the tours to local attractions and the rides on the back roads.

But the best part is meeting with the other owners and socializing.

We know most C1-C3 owners are not interested in long drives, racing or dyno. They are interested in eating and cruising.

Jim is right about mid-October being late in the season for most Vette owners. But during the summer there are so many other events, it may be difficult to compete with those. If it was moved up a couple of weeks, they might get better attendance.

As for marketing, that's what the ambassadors are trying to do.
I forward the NCM e-news to the members of two local clubs and talk to everyone who might be interested. Every person who checks this site sees the information.

What is the one thing that would say to an owner- WOW, I gotta go to the NCM this year?  For me it is the museum and the assembly plant. You won't find those anywhere else.  If the museum could arrange a behind the scenes tour of the assembly plant, that would get a lot of people there.

Now I am rambling, so it is someone else's turn.

I've been to the museum only once, late last year.  A friend and I planned the trip around free time from family and the C3X didn't fit in.  While down there, we also visited Maker's Mark distillery.

I agree with the assembly plant tour - we went on a Saturday and the plant was closed.  Not sure if they have it open during C3x or not, but it should be.  Discounts to some of the distilleries and to the Whiskey Museum that is about an hour north would be nice.  When I visited, I know the MM Distillery and the Whiskey Museum had limited hours and we couldn't do all three.  Working with those places to get extended hours would be nice.  Daylight Savings Time will be extended to November this year, so it will be light later in the evening.

Honestly, one thing that might help is a better web site.  I have been to the NCM site and I am not impressed.  The information is just not very helpful.  Maybe if they had phone contacts or e-mail addresses for people to get one on one contact.  For the 2009 Caravan, they already have that.  Maybe a link to our site with directions on how to sign up for the free trial would help - AND it would drive membership here!!  Folks would be directed to a thread on the C3X to start and then they would naturally explore more!

I guess I would have to agree with some of the other comments - market this thing!  NCM was at Carlisle last year (my first trip there), but I didn't see anything about it there.

I guess the last thing I would say is that although I've only been once, I only saw one hotel even close by.  That's a concern of mine.

One of problem are the ambassadors themselves.

Jim and Dave you are the exceptions rather than the rule, most of the ambassadors I've met are C-5 or C-6 owners and couldn't give at rats a-- about any other generation or any events where their generations are not the center of attention so they show no interest in promoting it. I brought up C3X at a club meeting in Illinois once after the NCM Ambassador "forgot" to mention it when they had their time to speak.

The museum itself needs to promote it more also and the time of year, in a word , sux, school is back in session, weather is turning to ---- , etc.

 Just my opinion...

My .02 is that the museum should boot one of their events for non Corvette owners out to October & give us one of the prime spots.

Now that I have been to 12 Labor Day and 1 CCX, there isn't much for us C3'ers to due at the Museum. The Lador Day Weekend does have vendors selling stuff to the C5-C6 guys a long with shirts, hats and the like out in the parking lot. I understand that the venders don't want to spend their time to a small crowd that the CCX has. It's the same story, the chicken or the egg. With the small numbers of people registed for the CCX the vendors wont sign up and if the vendors are not going to be there then the people wont want to come. I also agree that it is to late in the season for most of us, I had to drive in snow the morning I left Mi to drive down. I don't have kids to worry about so that isn't my issue. Labor Day is better for me but that is a personal decision. I did enjoy last year at CCX but I only due one road trip a year so I didn't go to the Labor Day Weekend.

After all my rambling I don't have an answer for you as to how to get more people to come. I happen to like just sitting around and relaxing at NCM no matter when I am there. More topics for lectures would be nice, even if it isn't from the experts but just by guys that have been there, done that, type discussions.

I have been to many of the NCM events and frankly if they want a better turn out they shouldn't charge for everything. (tours, racing, dinner, etc.)

I have said this before but just think about it....

Mid America puts on the Funfest each year... Cost to get in if ya have a vette - $0.00

Cost for T shirts & Poster - $0.00.

Cost for show entertainment - $0.00.

Mike has been operating on that "If you build it - they will come principle". It started out with less than 500 vettes in front of the warehouse. Now it is 15000 vettes and a 3 day event.

My wife & I have been every year, it doesn't gouge my pocketbook and it is a GREAT time! Do I spend money (you bet) but I don't hafta to have a good time. If I go the NCM events I hafta spend money for a good time or a can't go. It makes a difference... compare the numbers... (MA vs. NCM)

If ya don't believe it I can prove it... we have taken our local car show from entries of less than 200 cars to over 1000 in 3 years. How? free stuff. T - shirts, auto supplies, lotsa money, dinners at local restraunts, raffles, 50/50's & lotsa trophies, bands the night before, etc. You name it we give it away. This year we are going to shuttle people in from off site parking areas cause it absolutely overuns our downtown with cars. Visitors are having trouble finding a place to park and it's a long walk.

Just a thought...

The one big difference between MAM-FF and anything the NCM does is $$$.  And the entities themselves are entirely different animals (for profit vs non-profit) so its like comparing apples to oranges.

Mike puts on just a few gatherings each year and I'm guessing has a pretty good sized advertising/marketing budget to write off a lot of the expenses.  Sure MAM brings in a bunch of sales dollars - but look at their product offerings compared to the NCM store.

On the other hand the NCM hosts considerably more, but smaller, gatherings each year.  And dollars spent on those take away from operating and expansion budgets.  To cover expenses for everything means charging for everything.

I'm not condoning or condemning either one - just trying to level the comparison field a little.

Apples an oranges are different but are both fruits. Identities though for profit & not for profit both have a goal to raise revenue.
More to the point my illustration was not that NCM necessarily needs to utilize MAM or my local car show (which is non for profit)as a role model as such but that they need to develop some type of an incentative to draw a crowd. Point is if you want to make money then you have to spend money. I think it is somewhat unfair to expect to the participants to pay the entire amount with little return for the investment.
Tying in different Forums an clubs work well for NCM because people go because their group is holding a gathering there. (a non monetary incentitive). Maybe these type groups could run the events with NCM backing with a reduced rate or no charge for those members.
Maybe NCM could donate floor space in the museum to a couple of the attendees cars for the group working the in a raffle form. (Wouldn't you just want to tell the world if The Toy was picked to be on display there?) Maybe, NCM could work out a deal with the GM Plants test track if a group works an event a drawing is held an a lucky sole or two gets to cruise a new vette on the track. Maybe its something as simple as free brick in the walk or somethin. Bottom line is the more they give the more they can expect to receive in return. J.M.O.

Points taken.  That's why Adam put the thread here to get some ideas to present to the NCM kids to enhance the event's experience and increase attendence.

Change the date.

October is a touchy month for us northerners. I don't want to take a chance on being down there and in the meantime there is a freak snow storm happening back home. Like this past Oct. I couldn't imagine trying to navigate going through 6"+ of snow in a vette. And then subject the car to a nice salt bath. Yeah, that's healthy for the chrome and aluminum parts. Ermm . And not all of us can afford a enclosed trailer for our cars.

C1 thru C3 owners usually have a lot of time and money tied up in their cars just like their C5/6 counterparts. I personally don't want to take a chance on possibly wrecking my car. That's my .02 cents.

I agree with Darryl81, mid-Oct is getting late in the season for us northerners. But, I don't think I would want to be there in July either.
The weekend before or after MAM (Sept. 21-22 this year) might work.
Move the Pace Car event to the first weekend in Oct. or even combine it with the C1-C3.

Truth be told, I like the small, intimate group setting.Ermm

I too like looking at the vendors and all of the stuff, as well as all of the vettes. It seems that most everything these days is geared towards the C5/C6 crowd. I realize this probably makes sense to vendors, GM, and the NCM, because that crowd is spending the big bucks right now to buy the cars.

What they forget is that right now C1s now cost more than the C5s and C6s, the C2s are about that price or higher, and now some of our cars are reaching that range.

It's seems that these days the newer cars get the attention and the prime spots. I don't know about you guys, but I've spent enough on my car to buy any of the C5s I see on Ebay. I buy hats, shirts, pins, magazines, have memberships to 5 car clubs, and everywhere I go it seems that the attention is placed on the newer cars. (With the exception of C3VR!!)

I guess what I'm trying to say is that if the NCM wants more of us to go, they should put us eariler in the year when the weather is nicer, and not place us at the end of the year as if we are an afterthought. The newer cars are built to handle the weather later in the year, and ours are not. Get more vendors, have classes and demonstrations geared toward our cars, maybe even let us drive the test track. Show us that you care about our cars and our crowd.

After all, this is the National Corvette Museum, dedicated to the history of the corvette, and we are that history.

And yes, I am a NCM member.

I`ve yet to go to NCM. However, I agree the time of year is a factor.

Contributions from us little guys is always helpful but landing some  big corporate fish to  lay out some sponsership dollars for better events could work. I don`t know who already is a sponser but a big name attached to an event with some nice give aways  usaully gets my attention. Maybe even raffle off a vintage car.  I like the idea of a special feature cars also,  Mako 1 & 2.  concept and protopye vehicles etc...

This is a GREAT idea!
Must the NCM Raffle Cars be brand new C6s?
Why not a cherry C1, C3 or C3?
Kick off the raflle long before the CCX event, then do the drawing during it.

I love this idea!!

My wife and I attended last year’s event.  Like many have said the cold weather is an issue.  It was cold at the car wash.  We need to get it out of Oct.

I understand the date issue.  All dates already committed.  Here is a suggestion.

Combine the C1 - C3 with the C4/5-C6 event, but promote it as a “C against C” competition.

1.      Make daily events - competitions

a.      Tug-a war Cx against Cx – an elimination competition – Winning group gets named on the “High Compression Piston” trophy.  Trophy on display in NCM for all to see, with group car picture of the winning team.

b.      Fundraiser competition –

                                                               i.      Everyone puts in a buck or two to compete in events.  The winning C group gets the entry fees of a particular event allocated to their contribution pledge.  The C group at the end of the weekend event with the most in their pledge bucket get a group car picture and names hung at the NCM

ii.      People can offer their car to visitors -  A buck donation to have their picture taken setting in their car,  maybe 5 bucks for a spin down the street and back.  ( during my last visit I saw a lot of people that for various reason don’t have or can’t afford a corvette – I let a family set in my car and let them take their picture behind the wheel, you should have seen their faces).

2.      Evening Dinners-  help groups that form at the gathering to find restaurants that can hold 20 or so.   Big gatherings are great and should be part of the event, but one evening where personal groups can get together to bond is great. ( that one evening last year was a high point of the weekend.

3.      Special best of class display -  Let each C group nominate their representative to a special staging show in front of the museum.  “Best of the Best” of each C ever made.

These are just a few suggestions of allowing larger combinations of C groups to get together but still give due justice to all C groups in attendance.

I've sent the link to this thread to Wendell today.  Hopefully he'll be checking it out soon, and perhaps offering his comments as well.

If anyone else has any feedback for him, please post it here.

Thanks!

C3VR Members...........want everyone to know that we greatly appreciate the suggestions.  We plan to print the suggestions and will be reviewing with Roc.  A couple of immediate thoughts................

1)  We want you all to totally set the format/agenda.  We want it to be what you all want and not what we want for you.  So please keep making suggesting and we will tweak it until it is what you all want.

2)  The date is very flexible from our standpoint.  We have about 7 other events that we will want to work around...........and will be glad to do so.

3)  Marketing - - - this came up several times.  Please give us specific suggestions of what we can do differently.  We do a press release and send to all the Corvette print media (they will generally have some coverage in each of their magazines.  We promote via NCM eNews.  We promote via NCM magazine, America's Sports Car.  We promote to our Ambassadors.  I know we can do better, so lay some ideas on us.

We will have more for the group later, after visiting with Roc.  The ones we touched on above seemed to be the ones suggested the most.

Later,

Wendell

October is not a good month for us since we go to Eureka Springs the first weekend of October and can't get away again.  Something special would probably help also, C3 concept cars sounds like a good idea.
