Well team, it was a busy day at the Lukas house today. Put the Lukester up in the air real high on jackstands to start the TH350 to 700R4 swap.  (click here to see airborne Lukester)   (click here to see trannies side-by-side)

Went something like this:

Disconnected battery
Removed starter
Drained Trans
Unbolted exhaust and removed
Unbolted converter from flexplate
Disconnected trans lines, shifter cable and speedo cable
Disconnected kickdown and modulator
Disconnected e-brake
Removed driveshaft

The Bill (Per4mance) arrived to give a much needed assist!! (THANKS AGAIN BILL!!!)Star

We then proceeded to drop the trans and crossmember. Sailed out of the car without a hitch thanks to Bill and some very creative maneuvering!!

We then started the transplant by putting in a much needed flexplate replacement.

Then the new 700R4 went in. We lifted it up onto a jack with a square rubber pad and jacker her up into place. Bill is an absolute magician with a long extension and a wobble socket when it comes to bellhousing bolts!!!

I replaced the factory crossmember with a Bowtie Overdrives crossmember. The crossmember went in beautifully - lined up perfectly and they re-engineered the e-barke pulley location to keep it away from the driveshaft. What a great piece. My hat's off top them on that one!!Clap  That's Bill trying to hug the trans cause he like it so much!!LOL  (click here to see)

Took care of a couple of other odds and ends and Bill and I wrapped up for today. Off to the driveshaft shop on Monday to get a shorter shaft made up>

Things left to do??

  • Connect and adjust the TV cable
  • Mount Lokar trans dipstick (that thing just looks too cool!!)Cool
  • Put new trans cooler in and make up braided lines
  • Add Shiftworks shifter kit - it realigns the detent with the extra gear and they even give you a OD selector plate to replace in the console.Thumbs Up
  • Fill trans and roadtest.
  • CRUISE BABY, CRUISE!!!!Big smile

Stay tuned - I'll keep you up top date on how the rest of the Lukester's Trans-Plant goes!!

Thanks Bill!!!   YOU ROCK!!!

Later folks  Big smile  Stay tuned!! Wink

Paul

.....and two questions for ya, so far;

1) The new trans. cooler you mentioned - Are you going to have an external trans. cooler or will it be run through your radiator?

2) Do the braided trans. lines aid in the cooling process of the fluid?
Question

You're right. Everyone raves about it after doing this swap. Seems like money well spent.

Good Deal, Paul!! And you're right...it's ALL about getting the cable set properly.
I do have to question the choice of the deep pan on the trans, tho....looks like an easy mark for an errant rock, or dip in the road...

Nice job Paul! When you're done don't let that 1st gear get you in trouble, it's a neck snapper Shocked
I'm spoiled I guess since I've had a 700R4 all along. Too bad you won't be going to the show next Sunday at Stockton, would enjoy the ride down the parkway with you. Hope to see you in AC the following week end.

Kevin, braided lines and an external cooler.

Joel, I hear ya. The pan looks to be the same depth as my oil pan and have had no issues since I've been drivin with the new motor. I guess the fatal rock or dip will take out both of em if it happens Shocked  Lets hope that never happens...

Dave, yep, all that HP and I already have 3.70s out back. The difference with that ratio bewtween the 2 trannies comes out close to a 4.50 ratio. Goodbye tires!!!   Big smile    Notice grin!! Big smile   Plans have changed a bit for AC so I will probably be going down Saturday as a spectator due to some family things on Sunday. LMK if you still plan to go - maybe we can meet up along the way...or you can stop at my place and jump in Yogi the Yukon for the rest of the ride.Wink

Making lines and mounting cooler today.

Excellent Paul. You're one step ahead of me. Maybe I'll pickup a few tips. The wife wants to take her car to the gathering so I started pulling the top end of the engine off 1st. New intake and exhaust gaskets, a few adjustments, and when all is well I'll drop the tranny and dive into that project. I don't have the crossmember made for that swap but I do have the drive shaft, shifter detent and a few things I learned from Joel so here goes. Please post your progress, especially about the TV cable setting and adjust, it'll come in handy. Good luck buddy. (of course, with the great results of your efforts on your car, it doesn't look like "luck" has anything to do with it Thumbs Up)

Hi Gang, Working with Paul was a blast ,he had his toolbox set up almost like mine so things went real smooth. This little project gave me a idea. I have a 383 stroker available to me for dirt cheap, also with the deal is a 200r4 that was just rebuilt by art carr, this has me really temped to make this swap but i don't want to hack up a almost original car.Ya my vette has 100,000 miles on it and it is a little tried, but as the old saying goes "If it anit broke......." So maybe I'll keep a eye out for a project that is dirt cheap and make a c3 blaster.(Sounds like a new energy drink don't it?)Later all.....Bill                P.S. Paul it was my pleasure to give ya a hand,I don't mind working on such a nice clean car

Update:

Held up unexpectedly by the passing of my dear Aunt Rose this week.Cry   She's in a better place now and hopefully going watch over my shoulder to help me set the TV cable correctly!!Smile

ANYWAYS, got a little bit of work done today:

  • Mounted LOKAR Dipstick
  • Made mounting brackets for trans cooler and mounted cooler, with adapters for 6AN fittings
  • Made and mounted braided trans lines
  • Had driveshaft shortened 3" during the week and installed today with solid spicer u-joints

Ran into a minor snag - will have to cut/modify exhaust pipes next to trans - were bent to form fit around the TH350 - does not clear 700R4 on either side...RATS!!!Wits End

Whats left you ask??

  • Get exhaust system tweaked
  • tie up braided lines
  • Install new shifter detent and lens
  • connect and adjust TV cable
  • fill trans and make sure shifting correctly

  • DRIVE!!!

Stay tuned!!!

Paul

Paul,

When you finish modifying the exhaust let me know how much work was involved.

My '79 has true dual exhaust and it's going in for a 700R4 later this week. I'm trying to look ahead to how much exhaust work this will involve.

What I'm hoping is that the long sections of exhaust tube can be cut out and replaced with correctly bent tubes. (It's welded.)

Let me know.

Kevin

Depends on how close your pipes are to the trans. I wound up having the collectors welded to 2 newly bent 30" pieces. LukesVette2010-04-27 17:21:41

Hopefully I can get down to Jersey this year and see the Lukester in person.

Pipes aren't exactly right but close - I'll probably get over to the exhaust guys after the Lukester is up and running with the 700R4 and let them tweak and weld to get it closer to what it should be...

You're welcome to head on down to lovely Howell NJ any time to catch a cruise and a burger Kevin.

Update:

Set up and adjusted the TV cable> If anyone is doing this conversion, I highly recommend the TV cable set up that Bowtie Overdrive sells. They include the cable, carb bracket and all necessary hardware. Another really nice product from these folks. I actually kinked the cable that came with the kit and called them for another and they sent it to me for free!  Really great folks Thumbs Up

Filled the trans with 6 quarts (deep pan takes an extra 2 qts) and ready to start and add the remaining fluid. Should be running later tonight.

Currently doing my chores so I can play with the Lukester later. I'm power-washing everything that doesn't move!!! Shocked  Well almost everything Wink

Last but not least, I need to take the console apart to install the shifter conversion, but that's not necessary to get the Lukester up and running...

Later folks

Yeppir, the factory setting that you'll read all about is as Dr Joel told me yesterday, just a starting point. At the baseline setting, she was shifting 1/2 way early as well as 2/3 and 2/3 was doing some funky stuff under medium acceleration...Confused

Well, I wound up feeding half the adjustment back (adding back TV pressure) and the response was immediate and smile provoking.Big smile   I got another 10 MPH out of the 1/2 shift and she "barked" (not chirped) the tires.   2/3 will give you a minor case of whiplash and 3/OD is smooth and she humms along at about 1600 RPM at 60 MPH!! Clap

Joel, as always, U DA MAN!!! Thumbs Up  Thanks for your advice yesterday - you nailed it!!

Glad that was all it was, Luke-guy!!!Clap
Paul, another thing you might notice is, if you put the shifter into 3rd gear instead of O/D, the 2-3 shift will be even firmer. That depends on what all the guy did to the valve body, but it's a neat thing, since it allows for a little smoother shift when leaving it in O/D for "normal" driving, but if ya wanna romp on it, put it down into 3rd, and then shift it manually into O/D.

That has to do with the lock up?

....uh...no...
Has nothing to do with lockup. Just saying that depending on what was done to the VB, the shifts 1-2-3 will be firmer if the shifter is left in 3rd, instead of O/D position. It really doesn't make a lot of difference, it's just something I have discovered on my own.
The lock-up function would not be affected at all by it.

I'm in the process of edgamacatin myself on the lock up converters. But I hear ya on leaving it in third. It's like having a TH350 and a 700R4 in the same case!! Thumbs Up

Hey Paul,

In reference to the RPM's, what ratio is your rear diff? Is it stock or did you change it in anticipation of the 700R4?

Did the 79's all have the same ratio from the factory?

I'm gettin' a little "edgmacatin" here meself.

Had 3.55s in it but changed em out for 3.70s a while ago. 3.55s were very typical in 79.

Wow Luke - thanks for the post.  Frank has been online checking out Bowtie Overdrives as a project for the little lady this year...it's awful taxing on the highway & she's not getting any younger.  Sounds like you were happy with everything you got from Bowtie.  Did they have a kit to go with the tranny, or did you have to purchase everything "a la carte"?  Let us know - he's reaaaaaally interested.  Sounds like the Lukester is going to enjoy those rides on the Parkway now.

Hey Bobbi, great to hear from you. as I didn't order their transmission, my transactions definitely were a la cart. But, these folks seemed real nice and actually, I bet if you were getting one of their transmissions, it's possible that they would put a more reasonable package for them if you talk to them.

One thing you'll have to do on your own is have your driveshaft cut to the proper length due to the longer overall length of these transmissions. The standard 700r4 tailshaft is a hair over 3" longer than a TH350 - but like the old saying goes, measure twice, cut once!!Wink

Also keep in mind that without a lift, this is a gwm workout on your back to some extent (and you'll want a strong second set of hands and some really, really good jackstands. Be careful.

I'll PM you my number if Frank wants to call me with any questions.

Hi Paul:
Thanks for the info - appreciate all the tips...we'll need them.  Yes, please do PM me your number - I'm sure Frank will have Q's.  BTW, where did you get your tranny, if you don't mind me asking?  As for the jack stands...Frans is spoiled - his dad bought him a lift last year at Carlisle for his birthday & for an anniversary gift, I got him the scissor jack for it (that was more of a safety issue, than a gift.....it was cheaper than his hospitalization co-pay...LOL).  Looking forward to hearing from you - he really wants to do this, it sounds like a wise investment for many reasons.  Take care & hope to see you soon!
