Anyone from the upper MidWest (N/S Dakota, Minnesota, Upper Michigan, Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinois) going to BG in October? Care to join up in an informal caravan? Nothing solid planned at the moment but thought I'd see if there was any interest.
I'm thinking of leaving the Minneapolis area on Tuesday, October 12th and drive via I-94/I-90/I-39 as far as Bloomington/Normal, IL. Then on into BG Wednesday, the 13th, arriving mid to late afternoon.
Planning to head north again on either Sunday, the 17th, or Monday, the 18th, taking two days to return to MN. The return route is open for suggestions!
Last year's NCC to the 50th didn't feel much like a caravan to me as cars were so spread out on the road going south. And then I was a caravan of 1 heading north.
Please respond to this thread if you're interested and where you'd most likely join the group. I'll make a list of those interested and keep everyone informed of plans as they firm up.
* * * 9/24 Update * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *Here's a tentative itinary for the southbound leg of the trek to C3X.
Tuesday, Oct. 12th:- 9:00AM: meet at the I-94 rest area just east of exit 45 to Menomonie, WI. If you need to top the tank there are several gas stations on either side of the freeway at exit 45. PULLING OUT OF REST AREA AT 9:15AM.
- Noon-ish: gas and food in the Madison, WI area. Then continue south on I-90 to I-39 at Rockford, IL. I-39 south to Bloomington/Normal, IL.
- Late afternoon: gas and food in the B/N, IL area. Then I-74 to Champaign/Urbana, IL and then I-57 to Effingham, IL.
- Early evening: arrive Effingham, IL and book a room for the night. There are many listed on Mid America Mortorworks website to choose from.
Wednesday, October 13th:- 8:00 AM: breakfast at a place tbd.
- 9:00 AM-ish: visit Mid America Motorworks
- late morning: head for Evansville, IN (route yet tbd) Gas and food stop tbd.
- mid-afternoon: I-64/I-164/US 41 bypass around Evansville, IN into Kentucky. Pennnyrile prkwy/Audubon Prkwy/Wm. H. Hatcher Prkwy to Bowling Green.
- late afternoon: arrive Bowling Green.
I plan to have a Motorola-type radio along for car-to-car communication (channel to monitor will be decided on before pulling out of the rest area Tuesday morning). Will also have my cellphone along (IM or e-mail me for the number) so give a call if you'd like to join in along the way or find out where we are at.
The return trip north hasn't been discussed as of yet. Neither my co-pilot or myself have to be back to work until Wednesday, October 20th so that leaves lots of options open for finding our way back to the upper midwest. (Hmmm - two middle-aged guys driving cross country in a Corvette convertible. Sounds like a sequel to a classic TV show to me!
