The Corvette at 60

This spring, Sentimental Productions visited the Museum to film a segment spotlighting the 60th Anniversary of the iconic Corvette. The company produces DVDs entitled Sentimental Reflections, which feature America's heritage in story, scenery and song. You can check out our segment on the most recent edition of the video magazine on our You Tube channel online here.

A Tribute to Shark Week

While the Discovery Channel celebrates Shark Week, we share a 'shark tale' with you.

According to the late Corvette designer Larry Shinoda, GM Design Chief Bill Mitchell had an actual mako shark mounted on the wall in his office - one he had caught on a fishing trip. When the concept car was being developed, he ordered the team to paint the car to match the actual fish. Unfortunately, the team, despite their best efforts, failed after numerous attempts to create a match. Story has it that instead of matching the car to the fish - the team decided to kidnap Mitchell's mako one night, painting it to match the car, and then returned it to his office wall before he realized it was gone. It's said that Mitchell never realized the difference and praised the team for their duplication of the actual shark!

One Acre Club Spotlight

Johnny and Edie Downs got involved with Corvettes in the 90’s and joined the Museum in 1996. Not only have they been heavily involved with the Museum and Lone Star Corvette Club, but they are also the club’s ambassadors to the NCM. They have been top supporters of the Museum for many years and Johnny is also on the Museum Board of Directors. Together they have seven Vettes, including a 1967 black 427 convertible (Johnny’s favorite), and a 1995 convertible (Edie’s favorite). They consider their Corvettes daily drivers and love being part of the Corvette community.

“We were on the front row of this Motorsports thing, but what did it for us was a speech by Doug Fehan.   He said how the Motorsports Park could be a huge help in ensuring the long-term future of the Museum which really hit home for us. We want to continue to support the Museum however possible,” says Johnny. He says a second reason they wanted to get involved was that the NCM was almost out of acres and he didn’t want to get left behind!

There are only 26 acres left until the "One Acre Club" program will end. Will your name or your club name be included on the special park signage?

Members of the OAC will also be invited to a special track opening event that's not open to the public. Learn more on the Motorsports Park website at www.motorsportspark.org.
