Tomorrow at 9:30am we break ground on the NCM Motorsports Park. For the first time, we are going to attempt a live stream of the event! You will be able to watch it online here. We will also film the event and put it on our You Tube channel here.
Steve Brogan first got involved with Corvette when the C6 chassis hit the market. Seeing as his kids were growing up, he decided it was time to get a muscle car. He spent many Sundays at his local Chevy dealership and planned to buy his first Corvette in 2010, but when GM began to struggle in 2008, he panicked and ordered a Corvette immediately. He emailed the plant, beyond excited, and asked if he could watch his car being built. They directed him to the National Corvette Museum. Steve and his wife booked the Buyers Tour and on April 28, 2009, after much anticipation, found out production would begin on the new car in just a couple of days! They picked up their kids from school and drove from Ontario to Bowling Green, a 10 hour drive, to get here to watch production on his new Jetstream Blue Corvette. Steve says, “It was the most amazing thing I’ve ever done, I got to eat lunch and go on break with the people that were making my car.” He saw the marriage of the body and chassis, and after that shift was over, the plant was closed for two weeks (at this point, GM was operating two weeks on, two weeks off). He flew down two weeks later to watch the rest of the car being built. Steve knows this car will be in his family for a minimum of 25-30 years.
Steve is a lifetime member of the National Corvette Museum and was present for the very first Museum in Motion tour. He considers himself a big part of the family here at NCM. “I believe in the museum and have watched it grow.” With his oldest child about to start college, Steve tries to make it to the NCM once a year for various functions. He is already booked for the Museum’s 20th Anniversary celebration and opening of the Motorsports Park.
The enthusiasm in every Corvette owner is why Steve says being part of the One Acre Club was a “no-brainer” and “one of the best things I’ve ever done.”
Steve has already ordered custom plates for a Laguna Blue 2014 Corvette!
Leslie Gardner is a National Corvette Museum Lifetime Member and a member of our Duntov Society. She participates in autocross and drag racing, and conducts pro-racing timing and scoring for many major races. She currently serves on two non-profit boards and is a volunteer docent at the Peterson Automotive Museum as well as a NCM board member.
Leslie sees the One Acre Club members as Founding members of the Motorsports Park and loves the idea of leaving a legacy and supporting the museum. “Contributing in any amount is a great way to give to the future home track of the Corvette Racing Team and a track that Corvette Clubs and enthusiasts can use. Donations to the Motorsports Park can be from Corvette Clubs, individuals and businesses. Just think ... Major donors could have the autocross, skid pad or other areas of the track named after them. How great is that? What a way to leave a legacy!”
Kent Hussey fell in love with the Corvette as a youngster watching Route 66 in the early 60’s. It wasn’t until 1969 after Grad school that he bought his first Corvette, a ’63 Daytona blue convertible. He quickly moved up to a ’68 small block coupe but had to trade down to a ’69 Z28 when insurance rates skyrocketed. For the next 30 years, his focus was on his family and career so cars took a back seat until 1993 when he and two of his brothers bought a 1965 convertible. The car was a NCCC champion and they took it road racing with HSR throughout the Southeast for a few years. Over the past 8-9 years, Kent says he has been “severely infected with the Corvette bug” and has acquired a collection of 11 cars from a ’61 270 HP in fawn beige to a 2009 black/black Z06. His collection also includes a Tommy Morrison R9G driven by Andy Pilgrim on the 1990-1991 Escort World Challenge.
His wife Melissa is just as in love with Corvettes as Kent is and enjoys attending car shows, races, and almost anything car related with her husband. For father’s day, she took him to order his 2014 Corvette from their dealership in Atlanta- cyber gray with Kalahari tan interior!
Kent and Melissa view the Corvette as a piece of American history and appreciate the museum’s preservation of its heritage. “What makes the Corvette so unique, however, is its race heritage dating from 1956 up to today. It’s a true high performance car that is meant to be driven to be enjoyed. Driving on a safe racecourse is the only way to experience its capabilities. Having the Motorsports Park as part of the complex is an enhancement that will make the complex unique.” Kent believes all Corvette owners deserve to have a chance to share the passion and excitement racing Corvettes has given him.
