Since I was just scolded on the other thread , I thought I would start the OFFICIAL Paint site for my 79 vette. Satuday the 11th it will make its trek to Lew's Corvette body in Baltimore, MD. I talked to a bunch of places about it but decided on Lew's after seeing his work and talking with him. I really liked his attitude and he seems like the type that won't let a car go until its right. Although it remains to be seen how it turns out, at least I have a good feeling about it. Of course it will be repainted the original Frost Blue (otherwise I wouldn't hear the end of it!). I'll update everyone as it goes along, even though I'll be a nervous wreak! Wish me luck!

Barry, I know that nervous feeling you talk about. Looking back at how I had mine done if I were to do it over again it would just go somewhere and get everything done at one place like you have decided to do. Yours will look great when finished and you will be so proud to show it off next spring. What other upgrades do you have planned for this winter. Also how long will they have your car to repaint?
Sit back and enjoy this experience. It will be well worth it when its done!
Rodney

Rodney, as for how long it takes, I haven't asked yet. I really don't care as long as I have it back for spring.  As for other upgrades, the only thing I have planned is to put the Ipod adaptor on my Custom Autosound Radio. I don't know how much I'll have left after this is over. Painting is expensive!

do you have any idea what your cost is going to be. I figured to do the body work and paint would be around 4500 - 5500, but ended up around 9500. Yes painting is expensive.

Rodney, the whole thing is supposed to be around six grand. Everyone else I talked to was around ten grand. I think he's giving me a break because I was sent to him by a friend. Paul, yes it will be basecoat/clearcoat. Lew won't do anything else. He says its the best and longest lasting, just like you had said.

My 68 was Soda Blasted, body work and repainted in Texas. Was told the cost would be $8,000 but ended up $10,000. I was thinking I could get a great job in a small town at a lower cost(because of overhead) then the big shops in The Dallas area. I don't think I got any better deal now that I paid that much. However it looks great, but the body shop took too many shortcuts in putting things back together.

STUPID WEATHER!!!!! We got "snow flurries" today which translated to an inch of snow which turned to ice!  Took me TWO HOURS to go the 4 miles from work to my house! Now, if it doesn't clear off early tomorrow, I can't get the car to the shop. Why me? Why couldn't it wait until tomorrow? Dang blast it!

Check him out, Rick! My car SHOULD be there by then! Tell Lew I told you about him. The work I've seen he has done is awesome! I still will be worried, though. At least you found out about the other place before its too late! Good Luck!

Have fun with the car in the paint shop..is the place you are going to the same one that did the front end that hit a deer at Chips show??  That really did look good..could hardly tell an entire front clip was put on that..I am sure you can drop the car off when the snow clears up..take your time getting it there..its cold as heck up here too and the snow has turned to ice here also..it stinks..good luck Barry keep us posted with some progress pics.

I went once to twice a week for two months on my 68. I drove 60 miles round trip and all they wanted was money when I showed up. But there was progress. Paint looks great, but not put back together as it should have been. Body shops can take things apart, but putting it back together is another thing. They don't understand the vacuum system the windshield wiper door, the head light doors, fiber optics etc. they can just pull it apart and then screw it up afterwards. Be very aware of final product.

Lew shouldn't have too much trouble putting it back together. He has only worked on Vettes for about 25 years. I'm still nervous about the process but it just seems whenever I meet with Lew he puts me at ease. Like I said, I've seen some of his other jobs and there's no waves (like I have now) and the paint quality is excellent. I guess I'll have to wait and see. Too late to turn back now!

Well, I stopped by yesterday when I was working in the area, and she is all torn apart and partially sanded! Sorry that I didn't have my camera with me. Lew did show me how someone had done an improper repair on front of the right front fender opening, it was narrower and went smaller at the end. But no worries, he says it can be easily fixed. Also, while I was there, the one guy sanding on the car asked me if I was keeping the wheels on the car. I said yeah, but why? He asked if it was okay to polish they up as he is into metalurgy Big smile ! BONUS!!!!

Enjoy the ride Barry. Its cool you can visit to take pics, and watch the process. I did most of the tearing apart and stripping on mine, so I was at the shop pretty much every day. At times it was terribly overwhelming and no end in sight. But when I pulled it out of the shop for the first time I was as giddy as a six year old at Christmas.

I'm not gonna say what it cost just in case my wife sees this thread.Shocked Angry

Yeah, but seriously, nitrogen does not change pressure at varios temperatures, and it does not promote moisture, an important issure with cast aluminum wheels! Besides, it only costs $16 for a set of 4.

I took my car in for painting right after Thanksgiving -- 2009!  Yes, they have had my car for 13 months.  They told me it would take about 12 weeks and that was 55 weeks ago.  I'm now just hoping to get it back before the spring of 2011.

I have started to squeek.  I told him if he doesn't get the car finished soon, I'm going to start telling people who he is.  Since that would kill his business, I think he will now finish the car.

[QUOTE=LarryT]I took my car in for painting right after Thanksgiving -- 2009!  Yes, they have had my car for 13 months.  They told me it would take about 12 weeks and that was 55 weeks ago.  I'm now just hoping to get it back before the spring of 2011.

If mine takes that long I would die! Is it a regular Corvette body shop? I don't know, they'd have to have a REALLY good reason for that! Hope it works out, man!

Well, you guys do have it right; it is helium for Donald Duck and Nitrogen is great in aircraft tires that get cooled down to minus 30 degrees C during high altitude flight.  Water would freeze and then the tire would be out of balance on landing.  The nitrous is for whipped cream!Wink

Alan, he said the spider webs were caused by a repaint over old paint without proper prep. So it WAS repainted!  He is sanding down to the primer and starting over. He feels the soda blasting and chemical strppers do too much other damage, and if you don't get it all off it affects the new paint.

Barry, I was told the same thing when mine was done. He sanded mine down to the primer as well, not a total strip because he said the old pirmer would be a great base. I used a stripper on the headlight bezels because it was easier then sanding them but had to wash and rinse them down when I was done. As for the soda blasting it has to be washed off as well. I am going to use it on my interior console and radio bezel because it wont hurt the chrome trip, however it is a slow process I think. Keep us updated on your car. Pics when you can! Took me a long time to figure that one out.
Rodney

For the 55 week job, it was sanded down to the fiberglass.  All the seams were finished out, new base applied, etc.  But for it to take 55 weeks you can image there was a lot of time when nothing was happening.  Ever since the threat, things have picked up nicely and the car it finally going back together.
